WASHINGTON, D.C. — Russell Wilson, the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks, shed tears on Thursday as he remembered Trevor Moawad, a member of his inner circle who died of cancer this week at the age of 48.
Wilson’s lifelong mental-conditioning instructor, business partner, and, as the quarterback put it, “best buddy” was Moawad.
When asked about Moawad at his weekly press conference, Wilson stopped, cleared his throat, and warned reporters that the topic may be difficult for him to discuss.
“When I think of Trevor, I think of a modest guy who always served, who gave back, and who was always committed to working and assisting everyone,” Wilson added. “And everyone he assisted appeared to get better every time.”
Wilson spoke about Moawad for eight minutes straight, starting with their first meeting in 2012. Wilson was preparing for the NFL draft at IMG Academy, where Moawad worked as the director of performance, which included mental conditioning work with aspiring NFL players. He warned Wilson at the time that the quarterback’s mentality was going to divide him from the rest of the team. Following Wilson’s pro day, they started training together on a daily basis.
“He’s been my closest buddy ever since that moment,” Wilson recalled of their first encounter at IMG. “We spent so much time together, from the greatest, highest, highest of highs to some of the lowest points in our lives. To the moments of winning the Super Bowl, and, sadly, to the ones of losing it. He’s been there for me every step of the way. He’s a person who has always provided me with perspective, wisdom, and insight.”
Wilson credits Moawad for assisting him in moving on from the Seahawks’ heartbreaking Super Bowl XLIX defeat to the New England Patriots, which was decided when Malcolm Butler intercepted Wilson at the goal line. Wilson departed Seattle right after for his home in the San Diego region, where Moawad stayed for approximately a month. They spoke about not having the incident impact Wilson’s career at the dinner table.

Wilson often emphasizes the significance of “neutral thinking,” a notion Moawad taught to him. In 2019, he told ESPN that working with Moawad is “one of the most important things that I do.”
Moawad, a Lakewood, Washington native, has previously worked with the Jacksonville Jaguars and numerous college football teams, including Alabama, Georgia, and Florida State.
He and Wilson were among the co-founders of Limitless Minds, a business coaching firm that applies Moawad’s teachings to the corporate world. Moawad has “quietly and bravely fought cancer with elegance and fortitude” over the last two years, according to a statement released by the business yesterday.
Wilson said, “He concealed it in the sense that he didn’t want to impact other people.” “He didn’t want people to feel sorry for him, so I told him, ‘Trevor, dude, people love you,’” she said.
Wilson remembered a number of the things Moawad used to say to him on a daily basis, including one of his favorites: “The best is yet to come.”
Wilson’s voice got a little shaky as he expressed his gratitude for Moawad at the conclusion of his news conference: “Last but not least, Trev, I want to express my gratitude. Thank you very much. I wish I could speak with you one more. But I’m sure I’ll run across you again. We’ll meet up again. The best is yet to come.”
Trevor Moawad was a mental-conditioning coach for the Seattle Seahawks. He died on September 10, 2018 after a car accident in California. Russell Wilson mourned his loss and called him the best friend I’ve ever had. Reference: trevor moawad wikipedia.
