The winners of the Prince William’s Earthshot Prize have been announced. The prize was designed to encourage young people to think about how they can help protect the earth, and this year’s winners are a diverse group of people from all over the world.
The earthshot prize winners 2020 is a competition that is set to be revealed in 2020. The competition will award the best photo that captures environmental change over the course of one year.
The Earthshot Prize is a Nobel-style environmental prize established by the Duke of Cambridge and famous British naturalist David Attenborough to encourage creative solutions to the world’s most urgent environmental problems.
“We are living in the most critical period in human history — the choices we take or do not take in the next ten years will decide the destiny of the planet for the next thousand,” William stated in a short video shot for the awards event atop the London Eye.
“A decade may not seem like a long time, but humanity has a track record of solving the seemingly impossible.”
“Many of the solutions are already out there,” William added, “but we need everyone — from all walks of life — to elevate their ambitions and join in mending our world.”
“It is up to us to shape the future. And nothing is difficult if we put our minds to it “Added he.
In a statement released by Kensington Palace, Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne and a longtime environmentalist, said he was “proud” of his son.
“I am extremely pleased of my son, William, for his increasing environmental dedication and The Earthshot Prize’s ambitious goal. We must join together as a world to inspire, reinvent, and create the sustainable future that we so urgently need “Charles stated his opinion.
“The Earthshot Prize, and its inspiring candidates, will help us discover creative solutions over the next decade, keeping future generations in mind,” the Prince of Wales said. “We have a genuine chance to provide a better future for mankind while restoring balance between Nature, People, and Planet if we work together.”
Attenborough will talk during the event on the significance of the prize and his faith in humanity’s capacity to address the world’s most urgent environmental problems.
Five finalists will be chosen winners of the first-ever Earthshot Prize, which will be presented by the Duchess of Cambridge, British actresses Emma Thompson, Emma Watson, and David Oyelowo, as well as Liverpool soccer sensation Mo Salah.
Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, KSI and Yemi Alade, as well as Shawn Mendes, will all perform at the event.
Each winning solution will get £1 million ($1.3 million) in prize money to develop and grow these brilliant ideas that have the potential to save the world.
Prince William slammed the billionaire space race earlier this week, saying that the world’s brightest brains should be focused on repairing the earth rather than going to space.
It wasn’t the first royal criticism of inactivity on the global climate issue; on Thursday, Queen Elizabeth II was overheard stating, “It’s extremely annoying when people speak but don’t do,” when addressing the forthcoming COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.
The Earthshot Prize will be aired on One in the UK at 8 p.m. local time (3 p.m. ET) and on Discovery’s Facebook page across the world.
