2 first-stringers in danger of losing starting jobs ahead of season

The Philadelphia Eagles and the Minnesota Vikings have been hit with a huge blow during the off-season, as two of their starting quarterbacks are in danger of losing their starting jobs.

The nfl news is a story about two first-stringers in danger of losing their starting jobs ahead of the season.

The Detroit Lions aren’t anticipated to do much in 2021-22, and rightly so. Not only are the Lions a poor football club in terms of depth and skill, but they also play in the NFC North division, which includes the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Chicago Bears, all of whom should be competitive — at the absolute least — this season.

That doesn’t mean the Lions, with their new look, won’t have anything to prove when they face the best players in the NFC and NFC North. When the 2021-22 regular season ends, it will be fascinating to watch how things shake out in the “Motor City,” with former Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff at the helm and first-year NFL head coach Dan Campbell on the sidelines.

Just because the squad isn’t anticipated to thrive in terms of wins and losses doesn’t mean Campbell and Goff won’t have an easy time of it. With that in mind, Campbell and the team’s front staff will have to make some interesting choices about starters and general personnel in the coming weeks.

Before the start of the NFL season, the Lions’ starters are in danger.

Wide Receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown / Wide Receiver Kalif Raymond

In terms of starting wide receivers, the Detroit Lions now have Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman leading the way. The Lions have no lack of pass-catching alternatives on the outside, presumably because both Williams and Perriman have been injury prone and hit-or-miss during their respective NFL careers.

Although Williams and Perriman are unquestionably the team’s top two wide receivers when healthy, rookie pass catcher Amon-Ra St. Brown is now the team’s third starter at the position. However, as a rookie, there is no guarantee that St. Brown will emerge from the preseason in such a position, as he will have to fight off a lengthy line of excellent pass catchers before Week 1.

The Lions chose the soon-to-be 22-year-old St. Brown out of USC in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. St. Brown had a great college career, standing at an even 6’0′′ tall and weighing just short of 200 pounds, but as a mid-round NFL Draft selection, his position atop the depth chart will be difficult to keep with a seasoned wide receiver like Kalif Raymond waiting in the wings.

Raymond, 26, joined the Lions after spending the previous two seasons with the Tennessee Titans, when he helped the AFC South team find some consistent success. Although Raymond was often buried behind Titans wide receivers like as A.J. Brown, Corey Davis, Adam Humphries, and others, the Lions rookie shone when given the chance, particularly in the playoffs. Raymond, who adds grit and experience to the Lions, is unquestionably the greatest challenge to St. Brown in terms of a starting position heading into the regular season.

It’s also worth mentioning that reserve wide receivers Chad Hansen, Quintez Cephus, and Geronimo Allison are in the mix. Despite this, neither Hansen, Cephus, nor Allison will be able to overcome the aforementioned four for starting or important backup positions in the Lions’ 2021-22 season.

Defensive Tackle Alim McNeill / Defensive Tackle John Penisini

Former North Carolina State defensive lineman Alim McNeill was chosen in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, who promptly slotted him in as the team’s starting defensive tackle for the upcoming 2021-22 season. A starting position in Week 1 isn’t assured for a mid-round NFL Draft selection on a club with experienced depth along the defensive front.

Because McNeill has yet to play a single snap at the highest level, Lions head coach Dan Campbell may choose to start the regular season with second-year defensive lineman John Penisini. The Lions initially picked the 24-year-old defender out of Utah in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Penisini, although being a late-round NFL Draft selection, has some professional reps under his belt from his rookie year in 2020-21.

Penisini had 35 total tackles, 19 solo tackles, one sack, and one fumble recovery for the Lions last season, appearing in all 16 regular season games. Penisini’s statistics from 2020-21 aren’t very impressive, but the Lions would at least know what they were getting if they went with the second-year defensive lineman.
