Nanny who killed 2 children gets life in prison without parole

Nanny Yoselyn Ortega gets two life sentences for murdering UWS children

It provided a much-needed measure of relief for the parents of 6-year-old Lulu and 2-year-old Leo Krim, who were savagely slain in the bathroom of their Upper West Side home on October 25, 2012, while the mom was at a swim class with their middle sibling Nessie, then 3.

"I am very sorry that it happened, and I hope no one will have to go through what I did". "My life is in the hands of God".

The defense countered that Ms. Ortega suffered from a chronic mental illness and was experiencing a psychotic and dissociative episode when she killed the children.

Mother Lucy and Leo Marina Kim explained the action Ortega's desire to destroy their family.

Kevin Krim said his family introduced "Lulu and Leo's law", which will make it a crime to falsify job applications and references for someone working in childcare, to NY state legislature in "direct response" to the case.

Yoselyn Ortega, 56, was found guilty by a jury of murdering both the children.

Mrs Krim had not originally meant to return to court after an intense six-hour testimony during the trial, however she returned in ordered to "finish a awful chapter in my family's life".

Ortega wept as she spoke briefly - a rare show of emotion for her in the lengthy trial. Lulu and Leo is a powerful force, and now they are two starsthat will always lead us forward, "said the mother of the dead children. I ask for a great deal of forgiveness", she said in a shaky voice.

The former CNBC executive said he was trying to figure it out and "fumbling around" when a flight attendant asked him to go to the cockpit.

Greenwood told them he planted a bomb inside a female bathroom that was under construction, according to Sheriff Michael Chitwood. Chitwood said John Greenwood , 25, was naked on the baggage carousel and yelled, "The bomb is going to go off".

"There were blood curdling screams from a woman", Rima Starr, a neighbor, told the New York Times that night, adding that after hearing the screams she saw Marina in the building's lobby, with a towel over her head and Nessie, her surviving child, in her arms.

Ortega was found guilty last month on two counts each of first-degree and second-degree murder.

She settled her affairs by leaving her important documents for her sister and family heirlooms for her 17-year-old son - which prosecutors argued was proof she was of sound mind when she planned the acts of that day.

"Leo and Lulu will never live the lives that laid ahead of them, and now their remorseless killer will live the rest of her life in prison".

Marina and Kevin Krim left the courtroom before the sentence was read.

Prosecutors say Ortega knew what she was doing and understood "each stab, each slash" as she slaughtered the youngsters. Lulu was stabbed more than 30 times, and Leo was stabbed five times. "It was real", Krim told jurors.

Ortega had worked for the Krims for some two years before she killed their babies.

In 2012, in the aftermath of the killings, the Krims founded the Lulu & Leo Fund, which supports creativity in schools.
