Trump pledges to get ZTE back in business

"The company paid over US$2.3 billion to 211 United States exporters in 2017, a senior ZTE official said".

US President Donald Trump has told the US Commerce Department to get ZTE Corp., the massive Chinese telecom equipment maker, back into business after denying the company export privileges in April in a withering statement on ZTE's "egregious" behaviour.

The U.S. President has proposed tariffs on as much as $60 billion in Chinese goods, generating a similar response from Beijing.

ZTE is not among Qualcomm's publicly disclosed largest customers, which include Apple Inc, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Chinese smartphone makers Oppo and Vivo. The Defense Department last month ordered military exchanges to end the sale of ZTE phones on US bases.

"Huawei is trying to become the telecom company for the world", Lewis said.

Last year, ZTE pleaded guilty in us federal court to conspiring to sell USA technology to Iran and North Korea, violating economic sanctions and trade export rules.

For instance, MTN, a South Africa-based wireless carrier with 220 million customers throughout Africa and the Middle East, said the possibility ZTE would collapse forced the carrier to develop contingency plans. There's clearly a gap of thinking between the President and the rest of government.

Spokesmen for the Commerce Department and ZTE weren't immediately available for comment.

During the visit, the Chinese premier called for a more lasting, stable bilateral relationship. Sadayuki Sakakibara, chairman of Japan Business Federation, also took part in the event.

In response to U.S. actions, China has imposed duties on 128 products from the USA.

On Sunday, Trump appeared to ease the rhetoric, saying the countries "are working well together on trade".

But nowhere is the United States' trade relationship as complicated as with China.

Along with the simmering trade fight between Trump and China, the ZTE decision represents an example of the global consequences of the fraying ties.

Accelerating independence drive James Lewis, a technology specialist with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the tensions are likely to prompt China to step up efforts to disconnect from the USA tech sector.

Chinese leaders have tried to resist Trump's demands, but in recent weeks they have shown a willingness to negotiate. That's a key technology battle between the US and China - and one that China has a chance to win.

Trump has repeatedly cited a "friendship" with Xi, though they've met only a few times, and he has said that this relationship will endure no matter what happens with the trade talks.
