Nawaz reacts over ban on anti-judiciary speeches

The bench, comprising Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Justice Atir Mahmood and Justice Chaudhary Mohammad Masood Jahangir, announced the verdict after hearing arguments of lawyers from both sides.

A petitioner, Amina Malik, told the court that Sharif, his daughter Maryam, son-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar, Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry and Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah verbally attacked the Supreme Court judges in a rally in Jaranwala (some 150-km from Lahore) for disqualifying Sharif from the office of prime minister. "It is part of the code of conduct that a (judicial) matter can not be discussed until the court takes the final decision; however, news channels have been crossing the limit by broadcasting talk shows on such cases", said Chudhry Khadim Huddain, editor of a national daily.

He said the bench also dismissed Sharifs petition challenging the jurisdiction of the court in this matter.

Counsel for one of the petitioners, Azhar Siddiqui informed the court that Pemra did not take any action over petitions filed with it regarding alleged anti-judiciary speeches by PML-N leaders. Such verdicts are only delivered in Pakistan, he said.

Naqvi said that while Article 19 of the Constitution allowed fair criticism of the judiciary, not every person should be allowed to criticise the courts just for the sake of exercising the right, The Express Tribune reported.

The petitioner said PEMRA did not block these hateful and ridiculing remarks passed against the judiciary.

He said the court orders should explain what it means by speech against judiciary.

After the decision of Panama Leaks case, Sharif family and PML-N leaders are openly criticizing the judiciary, he added.

She said Maryam made the most adverse remarks about the five judges who handed down disqualification to Sharif. The meeting also discussed the political situation and other matters relating to the party.
