One week after Humboldt Broncos bus crash, 10 people remain in hospital

There's been a national "spike" in donations of blood in the wake of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in Saskatchewan that left 16 people dead and 13 others injured, the Canadian Blood Services said Thursday.

BOHC president Wendell Ahearn said players have been donating funds all week long.

Lazaruk, the play-by-play voice of the Western Hockey League's Saskatoon Blades, said with the Broncos set to play 58 games next season, he's hoping 57 other broadcasters can enter the booth for a game apiece.

"We just needed to give people the opportunity to grieve and send wishes to the families, so we had a banner we put up that people can sign their names, books they can send wishes to the First Responders, and the community of Humboldt", Berger says. "We thought it'd be cool to have a little street, community hockey game".

"Ever since I heard about the tragedy it's weighed heavily on my heart", Rellis said.

He adds following the crash, his organization wanted to step up and help in any way they could.

The jersey day idea has also been supported by District School Board Ontario North East, which is encouraging students and staff across the region to wear jerseys in solidarity with the families in Humboldt.

Boyd says after learning of the crash, she realized it could have happened to anyone, including her friends who travel to tournaments on buses. "I've gotten messages from so many in the community saying this is what we need". "Even though we're so far away we can drop what were doing and show our support and love".

Today has been declared national jersey day and people are being asked to show up for work or school wearing their favourite jersey as a show of support for the Broncos.

"The families of Brock Hirsche and Logan Boulet should be proud of the sons they raised; the city and university communities are extremely proud of them, too", the university said in a statement posted to social media.
