Modi speaks tough as more statues are targeted

Statue Vandalism – Tripura, Tamil Nadu and now Bengal, Politics stooped new low

"Raja's comment indicating that Periyar's statue be removed and the subsequent vandalism were a barbaric act".

The home ministry reached out to state governments saying they "must take all necessary measures" to prevent such incidents and that district magistrates and superintendents of police will be held personally responsible for such incidents. Soon after the triumph of the Tripura Election, alleged BJP workers vandalized the statue of Vladimir Lenin, a communist leader.

Almost 48 hours after a statue of Lenin was razed to the ground in Tripura, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence and condemned the escalating violence across the state.

Terming these incidents "extremely unfortunate", Shah said he has spoken to the party units in Tamil Nadu and Tripura and warned that "any person associated with the BJP found to be involved with destroying any statue will face severe action".

Before, any conclusion can be drawn; another Lenin Statue was razed in Tripura today.

Panneerselvam, who is also the AIADMK coordinator, described Rajas claim that his comment on a social media post were uploaded by his administrator as "ridiculous and unacceptable". Some then attacked the local BJP office in Coimbatore with petrol bombs. Two activists of Periyar organisation were arrested.

In Kolkata, in what was seen as retaliation to vandalism of statues of non-Sangh Parivar ideologues, members of an ultra-Left student outfit vandalised and defaced a statue of BJP ideologue Syama Prasad Mookerrjee on Wednesday. Miscreants used a hammer and a chisel to damage parts of bust.

The news came to light when the residents of Bhagwanpur Bahugara village found the nose of Modi statue to be broken. Senior district officials rushed to the spot and security forces were deployed in large numbers.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh Monday asked all political parties to ensure that those found desecrating statues are dealt with strictly and said such incidents of vandalism can never be justified.

Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba had also spoken to the DGP and asked that all steps be taken to maintain law and order, check violence and restore peace and public order. "It is not a silence but is an inactiveness of the state government", said DMK Rajya Sabha MP Siva.

The matter echoed in the Rajya Sabha too where Chairman Venkaiah Naidu called the incidents "madness".

Meanwhile, the President of the Makkal Needhi Maiam, Kamal Haasan, said on Wednesday that the Ramasamy statue controversy had been raked up to divert people's attention from the setting up of a Cauvery Management Board as directed by the Supreme Court.
