A New Study Shows ER Visits for Overdoses Are Skyrocketing

"Emergency department (ED) visits for opioid overdoses rose 30% in all parts of the United States from July 2016 through September 2017", the CDC said in a press release on Tuesday.

A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds DE hospitals have seen a more than 100 percent increase in suspected opioid overdoses.

"Long before we receive data from death certificates, emergency department data can point to alarming increases in opioid overdoses", CDC Acting Director Dr. Anne Schuchat explained in a statement.

According to the CDC, overdoses kill about five people every hour across the USA with the victims totalling 5,400 more in 2016 then the soldiers who died during the entire Vietnam war.

In the report, the CDC researchers recommended steps to better respond to drug addiction and overdose, including broader access to the overdose prevention drug naloxone (Narcan) and increased availability of treatment services.

The study was conducted using data from hospitals in 16 different states including North Carolina, which reported a 31 percent increase.

The data did not reveal what types of drugs or drug combinations led to these suspected opioid overdoses, Schuchat said.

Every state in the Midwest region experienced large increases: Wisconsin (109 percent), IL (66 percent), in (35 percent), OH (28 percent) and Missouri (21 percent).

"We saw, tragically, that in each locale, in each age gathering of grown-ups, in the two men and ladies, overdoses from opioids are expanding", Schuchat says.

The Midwest experienced a 70 percent increase over that time, a spike that was driven by rises in Wisconsin of 109 percent, IL at 66 percent, and in at 35 percent.

In his organization's recent report, Pain in the Nation, Miller, along with the Trust for America's Health, called for a national resilience strategy to address "deaths of despair", that in 2015 amounted to 127,500 deaths driven by drug overdoses, alcohol and suicide.

SCHUCHAT: We think that the number of people addicted to opioids is relatively stable, but the substances are more unsafe than, you know, five years ago. Others say one key could be training emergency room doctors and nurses to make sure addicts get help to break their addiction.
