South Africa's leader is told to go. What now?

Deputy South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and embattled President Jacob Zuma

The NEC noted the report of the Officials that the President had agreed in principle to resign and had proposed time frames extending from three to six months.

The ruling party's decision to move against Zuma was welcomed as "long overdue" by the foundation of Thabo Mbeki, a former president who was instructed by the ANC to quit in 2008 during a dispute with Zuma, who was then party leader.

Zuma stands accused of more than 780 charges of fraud, money laundering and racketeering related to an arms deal scandal.

"South Africans are wiser now than yesterday, they will not fight for somebody to be in a chair, they are not benefiting because of one person being a president", he said.

Zuma, who now faces as ignomious end to his nine scandal-plagued years in power, was expected to respond later on Wednesday to the ANC's order for him to resign. The ANC would appear divided and ineffective while opposition parties would be instrumental in bringing Zuma down.

The speaker of South Africa's parliament wants to hold a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma on Thursday afternoon.

The Guptas are accused by the public anti-graft watchdog of using their friendship with Zuma to influence policy and amass wealth.

The uncertainly surrounding Zuma's anticipated response comes in the aftermath of an early morning police raid of a wealthy Indian-born family with deep ties to Zuma.

But against this team you are always under pressure, and it was too easy for them to regain possession of the ball. due to their pressing.

Ramaphosa narrowly defeated Zuma's ex-wife and preferred successor, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, in the leadership vote, forcing him to tread carefully in handling Zuma for fear of deepening rifts in the party a year before an election.

The party's caucus met in a briefing arranged by ANC treasurer general, Paul Mashatile, to discuss the party's announcement that it would recall president Jacob Zuma.

Within 30 days of Zuma's resignation, South Africa's chief justice would determine a date for the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, to elect a new president from its members. In the last no-confidence motion in August, Zuma only survived by a tight margin of 198 votes to 177.

The party - once led by Nelson Mandela - is desperately trying to resolve the leadership crisis and bounce back in popularity ready for the country's next election.

The document was just one of the many dramas gripping Pretoria and Johannesburg, South Africa's political and commercial capitals, as the net closed in on Zuma and his allies.

The Gupta business family has been a flashpoint for national anger over corruption in state enterprises during Zuma's tenure.

An opposition-backed motion of no confidence has been scheduled for February 22, but its sponsors want the vote to be moved up to this week.
