Mikaela Shiffrin waits again as women's slalom postponed

The men's Super G has been switched to Friday, previously a rest day, to make room for the downhill.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist American Ted Ligety missed the podium but said his fifth place finish in Tuesday's Alpine combined has given him a boost in confidence ahead of his giant slalom and super-G races at the Pyeongchang Games.

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea - It appears the skiing world has finally found the secret to slow Mikaela Shiffrin in her marquee technical events: weather.

On Wednesday at Yongpyong, snow was falling and wind blowing this way and that.

"When you have gusty winds like that, it is hard to have a fair race, and the weather forecast called for winds to increase throughout the afternoon, right around our proposed start time for both runs, so that was a red flag for officials as well".

The women's giant slalom, which will take place at Yongpyong, was moved to Thursday with an earlier start time to allow a window for the men's downhill, which was postponed on Sunday.

Bradley said rescue efforts were still ongoing late Saturday and three of the four injured have yet to be flown out. Hualapai Nation Police Chief Francis Bradley said the survivors were airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital as of 2 a.m.

While some skiers, like Mikaela Shriffin of the US, will have to compete in back-to-back days because of the postponements, it seems like the safe call to keep athletes out of whiteout conditions as they fly down the mountain.

For now, though, she must wait to get in a starting gate, along with all the other Alpine skiers. Kristofic said he is "optimistic" about the weather on Thursday, saying the wind is supposed to die down and the course is in "perfect condition".

"So hopefully I can get another couple good days of training in and keep the ball rolling".

Shiffrin is now slated to race in the giant slalom on Thursday morning in Korea (that's Wednesday night in the U.S.), with the first run scheduled for 10:00 a.m. (8 p.m. ET Wednesday).

"Plenty [of time left]".

It is unusual, but hardly unprecedented, for men and women to have races pushed onto the same day at a major competition because of bad weather. Because wind could again present problems, Waldner said, three of the downhill's four jumps were adjusted so skiers wouldn't fly as high in the air.
