U.S. launches rare strike on Syrian government-backed troops

The overnight strikes killed an estimated 100 pro-government fighters near the Euphrates river.

Inherent Resolve is in Syria and Iraq with an explicit objective to defeat ISIS, not to fight Assad's forces.

The report described the attack as "a new aggression and in an attempt to support terrorism". Tim Kaine (D-VA), expressed concern that the massive attack amounted to the U.S. military stumbling into yet another military conflict, this time with the Syrian government and its allies.

But it lost its last remaining strongholds in Syria in November.

It coincides with heightened tensions between the United States and the Syrian government as the Islamic State war appears to be winding down, leaving eastern Syria roughly partitioned between US-backed forces and the Russian-backed Syrian government.

IS had held most of Deir al-Zour since 2014.

The statement noted that coalition service members were accompanying the so-called SDF while they came under the attack.

In June a U.S. warplane shoots down a Syrian jet for the first time after it bombs SDF fighters.

This information will be considered as part of an ongoing case regarding the charity's approach to safeguarding. The incident was reported to the appropriate bodies, including the Charities [sic] Commission.

The strikes inflicted what could be the largest number casualties that the coalition has exacted against the pro-regime forces.

Before the war, the Omar oil field was producing 30,000 barrels of oil per day, while the Conoco gas field was producing 13m cubic metres of gas per day.

The Euphrates River, flowing through Northeastern Syria, serves as a demarcation line between the US backed SDF and Russian Federation and Iran backed pro regime forces believed to be active around the city of Deir el-Zour.

What does Syrian media say?

However, during the mission, the Syrian militiamen were subjected to sudden shelling from mortars and multiple launch rocket systems and then came under fire from helicopters of the US -led coalition, the statement said. A reporter for the state TV station Ikhbariya said there were "dozens of dead and wounded" as a result of the attacks.

The officials said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed to the summit during a telephone call on Thursday.

Russia's Ministry of Defense indicated Thursday that the pro-regime forces had not been coordinating with Russian officials in the area.

The document also stated that it is also an act of support against the terrorist group of the Islamic State or (Daesh by its acronym in Arabic) and proves the nature of the disgraceful intentions by the United States against Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity and the unity of its people.
