Top ANC Officials Cancel Events as Zuma Exit Talks Intensify

Tobeka Madiba-Zuma

African National Congress (ANC) leader and South Africa deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa, on Sunday revealed at the launch of the Mandela centenary celebrations in Cape Town that he was employing the late statesman's strategy of being "careful" when dealing with hard matters.

But an ANC spokesman said they would not participate in those events due to 'other pressing matters. "We know that this matter needs to be finalised, we know you want closure".

The decision follows talks between the ANC's top six officials and Zuma on Saturday night to discuss the transition of power, said the people, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Ramaphosa has confirmed that he was in talks with Zuma about his future as the president of South Africa.

Zuma's spokesman did not respond to calls seeking comment.

Ramaphosa would become acting president if Zuma leaves office, and likely would be elected president in a parliamentary vote that must happen no more than 30 days after Zuma's exit.

Taking to Instagram, Madiba-Zuma posted a picture of her and the president and captioned it "my everyday crush".

Speaking at the Mandela celebration on Sunday, Cosatu second deputy-president: Zingiswa Losi said Zuma had to be recalled in the interest of the country.

Replying to a follower who asks whether it will be ugly, she writes that her husband did not alternate 'between the struggle and wealth accumulation. "He will finish what he started because he does not take orders beyond the Atlantic Ocean #mattersofthestomach (sic)".

After missing out on becoming Nelson Mandela's deputy when the anti-apartheid icon swept to power in 1994, Ramaphosa withdrew from politics, switching focus to business.

On Sunday, Ramaphosa announced South Africa's national minimum wage is to be introduced from 1 May this year.

Top ANC officials will no longer be attending events leading to the build-up of the Nelson Mandela centenary launch and will instead hold an urgent meeting this weekend.

He still retains the support of a faction within the ANC but has seen several prominent party allies desert him recently.

This would require Zuma to give evidence in parliament before the Guptas or his son Duduzane - who could implicate him.
