PH recruiters back suspension of OFW deployment to Kuwait

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte orders Filipinos back from Kuwait

"I want them out of the country, those who want to go out, in 72 hours".

Nevertheless, Duterte, who met the Kuwaiti Ambassador Musaed Saleh Althwaikh on Thursday, said he was planning to visit Kuwait "to plead my case".

Duterte had earlier in the day expressed disappointment over the Kuwaiti government about the abuses Filipino workers are experiencing from their employers in the Gulf State.

Duterte made the statements shortly after receiving reports that a Filipina overseas worker's body had been found in a freezer in Kuwait.

Acknowledging that most Filipinos seek employment overseas because of a lack of job opportunities and low salaries in the Philippines, Coronel called on the government to expand job training through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority so that skill levels were on a par with or even superior to those available elsewhere.

The President also said how the Philippines has always been ready to protect Kuwait from Iraq and expressed how come the Kuwaiti government is unable to protect OFWs there.

Duterte said the Philippines expected the assistance of the Kuwaiti government and other countries with OFWs to end the "inhumane" treatment of Filipino workers.

"We will count our lives by the hours because apparently, every hour, there is a suffering and agony, brutality committed [on] Filipinos", the President said.

He added the body of Dimapilis bore torture marks and indications that she was strangled to death amid a report that in 2017, 103 OFWs died in Kuwait, a significant jump from the 83 deaths registered in 2016. Keep them free from harm.

"It compels us to ask what we in the government has been doing all these years to give justice to them".

"We support the President's call to continuously ban the deployment of OFWs to Kuwait". But it is unclear how many would want to return to the Philippines.

The columnist urged President Rodrigo Duterte and his government to focus on improving people's livelihoods instead of being preoccupied with an "unwinnable" war on drugs that was falsely seen as his country's priority problem.

Even the Philippine Association of Accredited Agencies to Kuwait (PHILAAK) backed the President's decision.

In his speech during The Manila Times' 7th Business Forum at Marco Polo Hotel late Friday, Duterte reiterated his order to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello 3rd to assist all Filipino workers in Kuwait who want out of the Gulf state within the next 72 hours.

"The Filipino is no slave to anyone, anywhere and everywhere, every unlawful physical injury inflicted on an OFW is an injury I personally bear as the head of this republic".

Their group, Araneta said is already coordinating with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). "In fact, the valedictorian of the recent batch is a woman", she said.
