U.S. expert: Rapid Iran-Iraq quakes not unusual

According to the National Seismological Centre of the University of Tehran's Institute of Geophysics, the quake hit an area 13km away from the town of Sumar in Kermanshah province on Thursday at 10:29 a.m. local time.

A series of six moderate earthquakes shook Iran on Thursday, lightly injuring five people, the ISNA news agency reported, almost two months after a powerful tremor killed more than 600 people. The eighth natural disaster struck near Mehran in western Iraq.

Seven had a preliminary magnitude of at least 5, while the eighth was a magnitude 4.

Iranian media are reporting that a magnitude 5.1 natural disaster has jolted the country's southern province of Kerman. The depth of the epicentre was around 10 km.

Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist with the USGS National Earthquake Information Centre in Colorado, said the quakes appeared to be aftershocks from the November tremor.

In November, a major 7.2-magnitude natural disaster struck the same region, killing more than 530 people and injuring thousands in Iran alone. In Iraq, nine people were killed and 550 were injured, according to the United Nations. In November, a 7.2 magnitude quake hit western Iran, killing more than 600 people. While Iranian government has offered loans for those affected to rebuild their homes, many still live in tents or temporary shipping containers-style homes and face the rains and cold of winter.

Iran is prone to near-daily quakes as it sits on major fault lines.

The deadliest quake in Iran's modern history happened in June 1990, devastating many areas in the northern province of Gilan and killing around 37,000 people. "So far, no fatalities or injuries have been reported", a local official told Iranian TV.
