New study shows most people who try cigarettes become regular smokers

Smoking prevalence has fallen dramatically in recent years but almost 8 million Britons still smoke

At least 61 per cent of people who try their first cigarette become, at least temporarily, daily smokers, suggests an analysis of survey data by Queen Mary University of London.

Although it's unclear how long the smokers in the study took up the habit for, lead researcher Professor Peter Hajek, from Queen Mary University of London, said the new figures show how important it is to curb cigarette experimentation.

Researchers searched global databases for studies examining cigarette experimentation and smoking habits, including research from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Of those surveyed about 60 % had tried a cigarette, and of these nearly 60% said they had gone on to become daily smokers.

It is no secret that cigarettes are highly addictive. The research selected asked respondents whether they'd ever tried a cigarette and ever smoked daily.

The study is published in the journal Nicotine And Tobacco Research.

Jammu and Kashmir: 2 terrorists killed in Anantnag encounter
Locals told Kashmir Reader that Farheen was a Class 12 student before he joined Hizb ranks in June past year . Meanwhile, the Indian authorities have shut down mobile internet services in all districts of south Kashmir.

Professor Linda Bauld, Cancer Research UK's prevention expert, said the work highlights the importance of preventing experimentation in young people.

The dramatic shift from one-time smoking to a daily habit added to the evidence of the dangers of cigarette addiction, and the researchers believe their information could help in creating guidelines to prevent teens from even trying out cigarettes for fun. 215000 people were included in 8 surveys that were done in 16 years.

Young people in the United Kingdom are decreasing from the 2010 to the 2016.

But, in 2016 it had gone down to 15.5 per cent which is around 7.6 million people.

Across the United Kingdom, more men are smokers than women - with men smoking an average of 12 cigarettes a day, one more than their female counterparts.

For Deborah Arnott, the chief executive of the charity Action on Smoking and Health, the government can do much more than what's doing right now. She said, "The government is refusing to introduce licensing for tobacco retailers, even though there is strong support for this both from the public and retailers". Police officers said that more challans had been issued for drinking publicly and that people were challaned for smoking only when caught red-handed. Looking into the current record, Britain has become one of the leading countries in tobacco control, Steve Brine, the Public health minister said.
