Nobel Peace Prize Winner Warns That Nuclear War Is One 'Tantrum Away'

Two UGM academics to attend 2017 Nobel Prize award ceremony

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, or ICAN, received the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in Oslo on Sunday.

"An impulsive tantrum, a calculated military escalation, a terrorist or cyber attack or a complete accident - we will see the use of nuclear weapons unless they are eliminated".

It was followed by the tabling in the Lower House of a petition signed by more than 50 civil society groups urging Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to get Australian to join the United Nations treaty.

"It provides a choice".

"We consider the abolition of nuclear weapons to be a global public good of the highest order and an essential step to promote the security and well-being of all peoples", the pledge says.

"A moment of panic or carelessness, a misconstrued comment or bruised ego, could easily lead us unavoidably to the destruction of entire cities".

"No human being should suffer what we suffered", Thurlow, who was 13 at the time of the attack and is now an ICAN campaigner, told reporters on Saturday.

While awarding the prize, Norwegian Nobel Committee chair Berit Reiss-Andersen paid tribute to the ICAN's achievements.

India to host trilateral talks with China, Russia
The joint communique said the three countries underlined the primary and leading role and responsibility of States in countering terrorism and extremism.

"The risk for nuclear weapons use is even greater today than at the end of the Cold War".

"To every president and prime minister of every nation of the world, I beseech you: Join this treaty; forever eradicate the threat of nuclear annihilation", Thurlow said in her lecture during the ceremony.

These are some of the most important news of the day.

"I would very strongly urge the leaders (of North Korea and the US) to back down from their very risky rhetoric".

With nuclear weapons states modernising and in some cases increasing their arsenals, instead of discarding them, more states are becoming disenchanted with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and lending their support for an outright ban.

The treaty doesn't apply to countries with nuclear weapons - such as the United States, North Korea and Russian Federation.

In the latest in a series of sinister statements, Kim's spokesman said nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula had become a matter of when, not if. It is not irrational to think nuclear States can disarm.
