Study finds light pollution is spreading

The unfortunate side effect of LED lighting

"What happens instead is that people put more lights up".

The findings are in a new study in the journal Science Advances that used five years of data from a satellite launched in 2011. The few exceptions include countries with ongoing wars.

Some of the world's brightest areas, including Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the USA, were all relatively stable. Their measurements coincide with the outdoor switch to energy-efficient and cost-saving light-emitting diodes, or LEDs.

"For the United States, for example, we don't see much of a change". "In the '70s. we wouldn't have thought to do that, because we'd think, 'That's insane expensive!' But now it's like, you can do this fantastic thing with LEDs". The night time face of the planet is getting brighter and brighter, and that may be doing significant harm to the health of human beings, animals and the ecosystem as a whole.

Light pollution has been cited by several studies as a potential risk factor for various health issues, including cancer.

The researchers in the study, which was published Tuesday in the journal Science Advances, used data from the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suit (VIIRS) aboard the Suomi-NPP satellite from 2012 to 2016 to study surface light pollution.

Such solutions could save cities a lot of money, he added.

He and others argue that lighting efforts must be well-designed to reduce the amount of light going out into space while still providing a safe and comfortable experience for people on the ground who need to see at night.

"From an evolutionary perspective, now, artificial light at night is a very new stressor", Holker said. "So she grew up with an wonderful starry sky, and now she lives, within one lifetime, under a very light-polluted sky".

Jeff Bezos Worth Over $100B After Amazon's Black Friday Rally
The 81 million shares Bezos owned according to documents filed in April are worth $96 billion at Friday's closing price. Mr Bezos started Amazon in his basement in Seattle 22 years ago, after he quit his job as a hedge fund manager in NY .

"The world has experienced widespread 'loss of the night, ' with half of Europe and a quarter of North America experiencing substantially modified light-dark cycles", the researchers explained.

"While we know that LEDs save energy in specific projects", Kyba was quoted while interacting with reporters at a teleconference.

And rich countries, no surprise, are bigger contributors to light pollution than poorer countries. Migrating birds, which navigate partly by light from the moon and the stars, can be thrown off course when light pollution washes out the sky.

CHRISTOPHER KYBA: My mom, for example, grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan in a time before they had electrification. City-dwellers were annoyed by the glare from bright lights shining in their windows.

Image: Carla Schaffer/AAAS Most of the world is getting brighter, even when measured by instruments that do not account for the blue component of outdoor LED lighting. The research team looked at five years of data. Some sections have showcased a balanced development in light pollution affiliated with economic development, but more progressive countries that seem to get dark by interchanging to energy-saving LEDs showed no obvious decrease in their rates of light pollution.

KYBA: So a lot of places in South America, Africa and Asia are brightening really, really rapidly, up to 10 percent or more per year even, in some cases. Photos from military weather satellite photos showed the global extent of artificial lighting, but the cameras were not calibrated to measure brightness and were prone to changes in sensitivity.

KYBA: And that means that actually, the United States is nearly certainly getting brighter in terms of how people see the world with their human eyes.

That, they say, is due to the so-called rebound effect: lighting has become cheaper and more energy efficient, so people are using more lights more often.
