SADC intervenes as Zimbabwe crisis rages on

"We implore SADC to allow Zimbabweans to solve their problems without undue and biased interference. They need to be resolved politically by the Zanu-PF party and not with an intervention by the army".

Still seen by many Africans as a liberation hero, Mr. Mugabe is reviled in the West as a despot whose disastrous handling of the economy and willingness to resort to violence to maintain power pauperised one of Africa's most promising states.

This follows reports in Zimbabwean media that Mugabe on Thursday "agreed in principle" to step down.

Mr. Moyo's front door was blown open with explosives, scattering glass across the entrance hall, while the inside walls of Mr. Kasukuwere's house were pocked with bullet holes.

Mugabe had also reportedly demanded that all his wife Grace's allies be accounted for after a number of senior ministers were arrested in the wake of what is now being widely acknowledged as a coup.

Chergui said the AU would remain "vigilant" but "for the time being we hope SADC will succeed in defusing the tensions and promote. a peaceful solution to what is happening there".
