Australians have voted in favour of same sex marriage

The marriage debate is about nothing more or less than whether fellow human beings can be allowed equality says Bill Hoffman

More than 16 million surveys were sent out across Australia by the ABS, allowing people to have their say in the postal plebiscite.

In a poll for Lonergan Research, 49% said they support service workers being able to reject gay couples, such as refusing to bake their wedding cake.

The non-binding result paves the way for Australian Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull to bring in legislation allowing same-sex marriage.

Various opinion polls point to a majority "yes" vote, possibly as high as 60 per cent.

Government conservatives led by Victorian senator James Paterson, who supports same-sex marriage, have called for increased protections for speech and religious freedom.

The result was announced by Australia's chief statistician David Kalisch at 10am on Wednesday.

The fight for equality will be every bit as important after the postal ballot result, and in the parliamentary battle that commences from a Yes victory.

On Tuesday, a group of cross-party senators backed a same-sex marriage bill penned by Liberal Senator Dean Smith.

Nevertheless, discussions are well under underway as to how same-sex marriage might be legislated. Given the combination of moderate Liberals, Labor and the Greens in the Senate, it's unlikely any conservative amendments would succeed. Coalition parliamentarians, who were previously required to vote against marriage equality will now be given a free vote, Labor MPs are nearly universally in favour and a majority of crossbenchers will also support the bill.

Mr Turnbull's decision to use a private member's bill means there could be multiple bills put to the parliament, rather than a unified government proposal.

"Australians will be voting for today", he told ABC radio.

Senator Wong said it was hard to listen to a bloke who had long argued against the views held by the majority of the community to turn around and talk about the tyranny of the majority.

We're less than an hour out from learning the result of the same-sex marriage survey and campaign events are getting under way. "I don't think this survey was a vote on expanding the capacity to discriminate in our society".

"The simple message now is: pass the law", said Tiernan Brady, leader of the Marriage Equality campaign.
