U.S. expects Pak to take decisive action against terrorists: Rex Tillerson

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will deliver his first policy speech tomorrow on the US' bilateral relationship with India.

Calling the United States and India "two bookends of stability on either side of the globe", the Trump administration on Wednesday bluntly proposed that Washington and New Delhi work together in the Indo-Pacific region to counter the disruptive force that China has become.

"We have an global order that is under various stresses", said the official.

Tillerson added that the Trump administration is determined to deepen ties with India. "China's provocative actions in the South China Sea directly challenge the global law and norms that U.S. and India both stand for", Rex Tillerson said.

A senior State Department official told reporters that the speech was meant to map out a strategy for U.S. -India relations for the next century, in which the region's leading democracies - also including Japan and Australia - blunt China's growing influence and challenges to the rules-based order.

"It is the obligation, not a choice of every civilized nation to combat terrorism", Tillerson said in his first India policy speech.

Jose Mourinho's side have won both their group fixtures so far and will be looking to make it three in a row in Portugal. To make matters worse, they will be without captain Luisao at Old Trafford after his late sending-off.

The Secretary of State said that there were over 600 American companies operating and USA investment in India has jumped by 500 per cent in the last two years.

Tillerson said that the increasing convergence of United States and Indian interests and values offer the Indo-Pacific the best opportunity to defend the rule-based global system.

While President Donald Trump has looked to deepen cooperation with China on addressing the nuclear threat from North Korea, he's sought a much closer relationship with India, which also shares US worries on Islamic extremism. India has also placed a large defence order with the USA worth billions of dollars. "For many decades the United States has supported China's rise", he said. He said the two nations share goals of security, free navigation, free trade and fighting terrorism in the Indo-Pacific, and serve as "the eastern and western beacons" for an worldwide rules-based order which is increasingly under strain.

His remarks comes as US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has said that India can help the US keep an eye on Pakistan as President Trump has "taken tougher approach to Islamabad harbouring terrorists". We value and respect that. "This new approach will require understanding and restraint from both Pakistan and India", she said at a talk at the US-India Friendship Council.

The problem, Ayers and others said, is that the United States in years past has tried and failed to advance its own development plan for a "New Silk Road" in Central Asia - with nothing to show for it. Washington long tried to nudge Central and South Asian countries toward closer economic ties in the hopes that development would dampen conflict in the region.

"We are eager to grow our relationship even as India grows as a world leader and power".
