Record numbers receive tougher hate crime sentences

The Home Office data maps the number of reported hate crimes against events like the Brexit referendum and terror attacks

The number of hate crimes in England and Wales has risen by 29% to its highest level since the Home Office began categorising hate-related offences.

The new Home Office figures also reveal a record monthly total of 6,000 hate crimes reported in June, eclipsing the 5,500 recorded in July 2016 in the aftermath of the Brexit vote.

The overall figure of 80,393 for 2016/17 is the highest since figures of hate crimes were first collected in 2011.

Latest data show an increase of 29 percent, from 62,518 in the 2015/2016 period - the largest increase since police started registering hate crimes five years ago. Sentences in more than half of cases - 6,300 - involving hostility on the grounds of race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or transgender activity increased because of this factor.

The Crown Prosecution Service noted in its report there the number of hate crime cases being referred by the police were still around 13,000 per year, nearly ten percent less than in 2014/15, leaving Jewish groups with concerns.

There was a 45% increase in reports of transgender-related hate crimes, although the number of reported transgender offences was the lowest of all the categories at 1,248 crimes.

The report also noted that race hate crimes, which made up the vast bulk of all hate crimes, had increased after a man drove a auto into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London killing four people before stabbing a policeman to death outside parliament. The police have admitted that as well as better reporting, the number of hate crimes taking place has also gone up which means that in modern Britain more people are being victimised due to their race, religion, disability or sexuality.

Yvette Cooper, chair of the House of Commons home affairs committee, said the rise in hate crimes showed a clear need for immediate government action.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has expressed condolences with families of the martyrs of the blast in Kurram Agency. After being informed of the blast, the security forces rushed to the site and cordoned off the area to launch operation.

The Home Office said that as well as a genuine rise some of the increase was thought to be down to "ongoing improvements in crime recording by the police".

"But no-one in Britain should have to suffer violent prejudice, and indications that there was a genuine rise in the number of offences immediately following each of this year's terror attacks is undoubtedly concerning".

The report noted four spikes in racially or religiously aggravated offences - in June 2016 and March, May and June of this year.

Following the European Union referendum, this number reached a monthly peak of 5,500 in July 2016.

The new figures come after it was revealed fewer alleged hate criminals were prosecuted a year ago.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) annual statistics show that there were a total of 14,480 prosecutions completed across England and Wales in 2016-17, down by nearly 1,000 on the previous year.

The Home Office said it was spending £2.4m on protecting places of worship, a further £1m for vulnerable faith institutions and £900,000 to support community projects.
