Sky investors back reappointment of chairman James Murdoch

The investigation is expected to last for six months

A Sky spokeswoman said Mr Murdoch was "uniquely well-placed" to be chairman. That included support from largest shareholder Fox, which controls a voting stake of 37.19 percent in Sky.

Almost half of independent shareholders voted to oppose Mr Murdoch's reappointment amid concerns over his role as chief executive of 21st Century Fox, which is attempting to seize control of the 61% of Sky it does not already own in an £11.7 billion deal.

Shareholders of Sky plc, the owner of Sky News, have voted to reappoint James Murdoch as chairman of Europe's largest pay-TV broadcaster.

Fox, which now owns 39.1% of Sky, is trying to buy full control of the business in a deal that would value it at £18.5bn.

Fox's US$15 billion bid for Sky is now with United Kingdom competition watchdogs.

Mr Murdoch won 51% of votes cast by independent shareholders at the annual general meeting - up from 49% a year ago.

"Independent oversight of the board is particularly important given Fox's ongoing bid to acquire Sky".

Ofcom chief executive Sharon White has said she is "absolutely confident" that the broadcasting regulator was right in ruling that the planned purchase of Sky by Rupert Murdoch's 21 Century Fox would not undermine its broadcasting standards.

Huge cheers could be heard in the background as she succeeded in lifting the shark up and threw it back into the sea. The real estate agent went down to the pool with her kids and said it was easy to spot the shark swimming around.

The committee includes Mr Gilbert, Jeremy Darroch, Sky's chief executive and Andrew Griffith, Sky's chief operating officer.

Overall, Britain's Competitions and Markets Authority will assess the impact of the Murdoch family's proposed deal on both broadcasting standards and media plurality, the CMA said in a statement.

Earlier, Sky reported what were regarded by City analysts as strong results for the first three months of its financial year.

"Are you confident that the CMA won't unearth new Fox scandals which derail the bid?", Alaphia Zoyab from activist group Avaaz asked.

European pay-TV giant Sky, facing a possible takeover by Rupert Murdoch´s 21st Century Fox, announced Thursday a surge in subscribers on keen demand for cult United States series Game of Thrones.

Mr Darroch said it was a strong start to the new financial year: "Against the backdrop of pressure on consumer spending and lower spend on United Kingdom television advertising, we were particularly pleased with our own EBITDA growth of 15% in our established business".

Game of Thrones helped Sky increase customer numbers by 51 per cent in the first quarter, as revenue and earnings also grew. The company launched new streaming services in Spain and Switzerland in the quarter.
