Lavrov says Tehran abides by all commitments on Iran nuclear deal

President Trump reportedly wants to return the U.S. to the level of nuclear weapons stockpiled in the 1960s

Trump is also expected to seek amendments in the existing deal with respect to the requirement for the United States president to re-certify Iran's compliance every 90 days.

The agency quotes Zarif as saying that if the United States acts against the deal, Iran will offer a "tougher response".

Notably, the committee's top Republican, Rep. Ed Royce, said the USA should adhere to the deal.

Mogherini noted that the global community, including the European Union and other U.S. allies, will continue to abide by the deal even if Trump chooses not to certify Iran's compliance, something which has been confirmed eight times by the worldwide Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). "That ship has sailed", according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. If he does that, Congress would then have 60 days to decide whether to re-impose the sanctions against Iran, which were lifted under the JCPOA.

"The decertification is an essential first step to persuading the Europeans that the alternatives to fixing the deal could be President Trump's decision to abandon the deal", said Mark Dubowitz, CEO of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a nonpartisan policy institute. Under a new version being negotiated with Congress, he would have to endorse the deal less frequency but the USA intelligence community would have to assess whether Iran is carrying out covert activity in facilities not visited by the IAEA.

She pointed to other worldwide agreements that the United States has abandoned but the rest of the world has remained committed to, including the Paris Agreement on climate change, and said, "What will happen would simply be that the USA will contravene a UNSC resolution and the rest of the world will stick to it".

Republican legislators recently began drawing up new versions of the law that remove the 90-day timetable and replace it with "semi-annual" certifications, according to the officials.

The women's trophy will be presented by U.S. great Billie Jean King, 50 years after she won her first Australian Open title. And Australian Open organisers confirmed she is still pushing to return to the WTA Tour in Melbourne Park.

Leading House Republicans huddled with national security adviser H.R. McMaster Wednesday evening for a classified briefing on the administration's plan for the 2015 agreement. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., would demand that the intelligence community produce judgments on a wide range of Iranian behavior that is not covered by the nuclear deal, including ballistic missile testing and development and threats to Israel and the Mideast more broadly. But many of his top national security aides don't want to dismantle the agreement, and America's European allies have lobbied the Trump administration and Congress to preserve the accord.

"Somehow Iran has become kind of now the victim, not the pariah state it used to be seen as by many outside forces", said Majidyar, who is director of a project called IranObserved at the Middle East Institute.

Every Republican in Congress opposed the global accord reached under Democratic former President Barack Obama two years ago. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., and Nita Lowey, D-N.Y.

He has criticized the agreement's "sunset clauses", under which some restrictions on Iran's nuclear program would expire over time.

If the US made a decision to reimpose nuclear-related sanctions on Iran, it would be in breach of the JCPOA.

The other signatories to the JCPOA - the UK, France, Germany, Russia, China and Iran, have said it is not realistic to try to renegotiate its terms.

Before the agreement was signed in 2015, Iran was widely condemned by other world powers. He still has concerns with how the accord will contain Iran in the future, but he doesn't want the pact ditched. "But the good news is if we can get to the American public like we did on health care. and we have our military, Cabinet members who already think the deal is working, we hope he would re-evaluate". Tillerson's spokesman said they discussed several issues, including Iran.
