Trump expected to tap Kirstjen Nielsen to lead Department of Homeland Security

John Kelly Kirstjen Nielsen

President Donald Trump reportedly plans to nominate Kirstjen Nielsen, a longtime aide to chief of staff John Kelly, to head the Department of Homeland Security.

The White House says Nielsen has "extensive professional experience in the areas of homeland security policy and strategy, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure and emergency management". Her "rigid style" under Trump's chief of staff and her emphasis on professionalism had some White House staffers calling her "Nurse Ratched", Politico reported last month.

Mr. Trump could announce his choice as soon as Wednesday, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to make it public.

Nielsen, the deputy White House chief of staff, was a top aide to Kelly when he led the department and moved with him to the White House when he became chief of staff.

France must be aggressive from the start against Belarus, says Hugo Lloris
But with the injured Ousmane Dembele, Paul Pogba and Benjamin Mendy still to return, Matuidi told reporters : "We have huge potential.

Added Frances Townsend, her boss at the White House during the Bush administration: "She is tough as nails, competent and has rightly earned the president's respect".

If confirmed by the Senate, Nielsen would take the reins at a sprawling department with more than 240,000 employees that is responsible for US border and airport security, immigration policy, disaster response, refugee admissions and other matters. The department also is responsible for USA border security. She also created and managed the office of Legislative Policy and Government Affairs at the Transportation Security Administration.

Kirstjen Nielsen, left, will be nominated to replace her former boss, John Kelly, as Secretary of Homeland Security.

"She's a total homeland security expert - absolutely has no learning curve", said Michael Allen, who worked with Ms. Nielsen during the Bush administration. "I think her no-nonsense, business-like manner is what earned the confidence, first of General Kelly, and now the President".
