Impeach Trump? House Dem offers resolution and withdraws it

Tom Steyer and Donald Trump

In what marked an escalation of the Democratic Party's opposition to Donald Trump, Congressman Al Green introduced a resolution to impeach the president on the floor of the House of Representatives Wednesday. Green rattled off a list of what he believes are impeachment-worth offenses: demeaning women with "stealthy sexism", disrespecting Puerto Ricans' needs in the wake of Hurricane Maria, blaming "both sides" for the fatal White Supremacist rally in Charlottesville, singling out Muslim Americans with a travel ban, attacking transgender members of the military with a trans ban, disrespecting football players and their mothers (remember when Trump called protesting athletes "sons of bitches"?), and completely fabricating a story about President Barack Obama wiretapping Trump Tower.

Green said such statements have brought disrepute on the presidency and undermined the integrity of the office. The statute establishes a mechanism by which the Vice-President could take power if the President dies, resigns, or is removed from office. U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman of California was the first to do so in July.

Since "high crimes and misdemeanors" was a legal term of art used in 18th-century British impeachments, some legal scholars have argued that mere dereliction of duty is a sufficient standard.

Green's resolution is considered "privileged" by the House, meaning it has to be considered by the end of the week.

Under the Constitution, if the House votes to impeach the president, the Senate may remove the president from office with a two-thirds majority vote.

Virginia Magistrate Seeks Arrest of Man Beaten During White Supremacist Rally
A black man who was caught on video being beaten by Charlottesville protesters in August is now facing felony charges. Stephen Upman said that an unnamed alleged victim detailed the events that occurred prior to the beating of Harris .

The letter, which was sent to Democratic congressional offices and the party's House and Senate campaign committees, and shared with The New York Times by an aide to Mr. Steyer, represents a significant boost to efforts on the left to make impeachment a mainstream political consideration.

While Green's actions won't lead to an immediate impeachment of the President, it is yet another step in that direction.

"I want my colleagues do what their consciences dictates, as will I, and we'll let history judge us all", Green said. But aside from that minor detail, the other, most likely the reason is a simple one: Democrats are not ready to impeach Trump at this point, something Green is well aware of.

"Any discussions I may have had are private, and I will not discuss them", Green told reporters Wednesday, adding that he felt "not one scintilla" of pressure from party leaders.

This second round of impeachment articles against the president may have sounded impressive, but once again it has already turned out to be a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing much of real importance.
