Entire world could be powered by a single deep-sea wind farm

Researchers say ocean winds could power all of human civilization

But the new research suggests that if the wind energy flowing over the oceans can be converted into electric energy then, it is sufficient enough to power the human civilization.

Researchers at the Carnegie Institution for Science have discovered something rather remarkable about wind farms - we've apparently been doing it wrong. At onshore facilities, each turbine weakens the power generation potential of each additional turbine downwind of it in a phenomenon known as a "wind shadow". Meaning they can only extract as much energy comes down to the level of the wind turbine from the upper levels of the atmosphere.

"Are the winds so fast just because there is nothing out there to slow them down?"

Computer simulations showed that wind turbines in the North Atlantic would be able to generate at least four times more energy per square metre than their counterparts on land.

"Over land, the turbines are just sort of scraping the kinetic energy out of the lowest part of the atmosphere, whereas over the ocean, it's depleting the kinetic energy out of most of the troposphere, or the lower part of the atmosphere", said Caldeira, as The Washington Post reports.

The entire world could be powered by one deep-sea wind farm stretching across the Atlantic, a new study finds.

Game Boy Classic speculation sparked by new Nintendo trademarks
To my mind, the only real question in whether Nintendo will release a retro Game Boy console or a retro N64 console first. Earlier this summer, Nintendo filed a trademark for its N64 controller prompting hopes the 64-bit console might be next.

But that drops significantly in the summer - in this climate, the wind farm wouldn't even generate enough power for the entirety of Europe.

To try and answer that question Possner and Caldeira created complex modelling tools which compared land-based wind farms in Kansas with theoretical wind farms that would be built far out in the ocean.

Wind speeds on the ocean can be as much as 70% higher than on land.

In the North Atlantic, in particular, the drag introduced by wind turbines would not slow down winds as much as they would on land, the researchers found. This is largely due to the fact that large amounts of heat pouring out of the North Atlantic Ocean and into the overlying atmosphere, especially during the winter.

"We found that giant ocean-based wind farms are able to tap into the energy of the winds throughout much of the atmosphere, whereas wind farms onshore remain constrained by the near-surface wind resources", says Anna Possner, co-author of the study. The authors identified the North Atlantic as a region where annual electricity generation rates could average more than 6 watts per square meter, despite seasonal fluctuations.
