Virginia Magistrate Seeks Arrest of Man Beaten During White Supremacist Rally

Charlottesville magistrate issues warrant for black victim of parking garage beating

A group of six men violently beat DeAndre Harris, a counterprotester, in a parking garage next to the Charlottesville Police Department on August 12 after a white nationalist rally was dispersed by police.

A black man who was caught on video being beaten by Charlottesville protesters in August is now facing felony charges.

A local magistrate issued an arrest warrant on Monday for DeAndre Harris, 20, who is being charged with one count of malicious wounding, according to local reports. Two men, Daniel Borden and Alex Michael Ramos, were later arrested and charged with malicious wounding.

Lt. Stephen Upman said that an unnamed alleged victim detailed the events that occurred prior to the beating of Harris.

Harris' attorney, Lee Merritt, slammed this new development as a "clearly retaliatory" from white supremacists after Harris turned to social media to identify those who beat him.

Duterte's public support falls amid killings in drug war
Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella shrugged off the survey results, saying in jest that Filipinos still "love" Duterte. The president recorded a net trust rating of 60%, plummeting 15 points from the 75% score in the previous quarter.

However, as WCPO notes, white supremacists on Twitter appeared to be celebrating the issuance of the warrant on Monday, with one white nationalist appearing to claim that it was a group effort to collect evidence on Harris. Now, more than two months after that incident, Charlottesville authorities have issued a warrant for his arrest.

"The victim went to the Magistrate's office, presented the facts of what occurred and attempted to obtain the warrant", the police in Charlottesville said in the statement.

A video of the beating shows a group of approximately six people converging on Harris before clubbing him with wooden sticks, and kicking and stomping him inside a downtown parking garage last August. Not only is [the victim] charged with a crime but he's charged at the same level as the men who broke his bones, who caused serious bodily injuries, caused him to get 18 staples in his head ... the men who beat him within an inch of his life.

Merritt is adamant that his client was not the antagonist in the incident and noted that Harris has plans to turn himself in to the police in the days to come. "I also have a laceration across my right eyebrow, abrasions on my knees & elbows, and a chipped tooth". Ramos even stated, "There were some non-racist members who were going to a free speech rally".
