Court orders gov't, Tepco to pay 500 mil. yen over Fukushima crisis

Government, Tepco ordered to pay about ¥500 million in damages for Fukushima disaster

In Japan, the court laid the responsibility for the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant that occurred in 2011, the country's authorities and the company-operator of nuclear power plants Tepco.

Nuclear Regulation Authority spokesman Kazuhiro Okuma told reporters that the authority plans to discuss whether to appeal the ruling with other government agencies.

In his ruling, presiding Judge Hideki Kanazawa ordered the government and TEPCO to pay ¥250 million each in damages to a total of some 2,900 of the plaintiffs. Tepco also said in a statement, "We will study the content (of the ruling) and consider our response". The district court turned down that request.

This is the third ruling in some 30 similar lawsuits nationwide and the second one recognizing the government's responsibility for damages. The plaintiffs in the Chiba and Maebashi cases were evacuees, including those who were subject to government evacuation orders and those who had left their homes at their own discretion.

Pakistan were forced to play at the neutral venue following a deadly terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore in 2009. They themselves were playing the first series since the retirements of Misbah and Younis Khan.

(TEPCO), which ran the Fukushima plant, to pay $4.5 million to 3,800 plaintiffs after it said the company failed to make safety improvements, even though leaders there knew the risk a massive tsunami would pose to the plant.

The assessment, made by the government's natural disaster research promotion unit, predicted a 20 percent chance of a magnitude-8 level tsunami-triggering quake occurring along the Japan Trench in the Pacific Ocean within 30 years, including the area off Fukushima.

In its defense, the government said that before the meltdowns, it did not have the power to force Tepco to take protective anti-flooding measures and was only authorized to do so by legislation passed after the accident.

They demanded payment of monthly compensation in the amount of 50 thousand yen (the equivalent of about 380 euros) up until the level of radiation contamination in the Fukushima area will be reduced to indicators, Samarasya before the accident. Around 55,000 people remained evacuated both within and outside Fukushima Prefecture as of the end of August.
