Sheikh Hasina accuses Myanmar of provoking 'war' over Rohingyas

Divided Asean urged to act on Rohingya crisis

"We crossed the border the day before yesterday", said newly-arrived refugee Mohammad Hossain, explaining that his group was brought to the Balukhali camp in the Cox's Bazar district by the Bangladeshi army in a truck. Two thousand acres (790 hectares) of land next to the existing Kutupalong camp were set aside last month for the new Rohingya arrivals. At close to 700,000 people, this will become the world's largest refugee camp.

Their figure includes the 515,000 who have arrived since August, more than 300,000 Rohingya who were already in Bangladesh, having fled earlier suppression, a contingency for another 91,000 and 300,000 Bangladesh villagers in so-called host communities who also need help. The United Nations has praised Bangladesh's "extraordinary spirit of generosity" in opening up its borders.

Observers believe that as many as 100,000 more people may be waiting to cross to the southeast Bangladeshi port of Cox's Bazar from Myanmar's Rakhine state, the International Organisation for Migration said, citing staff members monitoring the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

The aid agencies appealed last week for 434 million United States dollars to support the refugees and local community for the next six months.

On Saturday, Hasina reiterated that the settlements for Rohingya Muslims would be temporary until they returned to their homes in Myanmar.

U.S. backs 300 percent in duties on Bombardier after Boeing complaint
The punitive tariffs will now have to be approved by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) early next year. The 80 per cent duty comes on top of duties of almost 220 per cent US Commerce Department announced last month.

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) did not say what action it would take after the ceasefire ends at midnight on Monday, but it was "determined to stop the tyranny and oppression" waged against the Rohingya people.

The shadowy, poorly-armed Arsa tipped northern Rakhine into crisis when it ambushed police posts on Aug 25.

Rohingya refugees and rights groups have accused the army of setting the fires with the help of Buddhist vigilante mobs. The U.N. has described the violence in Myanmar as "ethnic cleansing". Bangladesh has made the journey even more hard with a clampdown on boats running refugees across the Naf river that separates the two countries.

While the worst of the bloodshed appears to have abated in recent weeks, tens of thousands of Rohingya continue to stream over to Bangladesh, passing through a violence-scarred region where hundreds of villages have been reduced to smouldering ash.
