Ghana capital Accra rocked by huge gas station blasts

Accra explosion

The massive explosion occurred at the MANSCO gas station at Atomic Junction near the University of Ghana, resulting in a blackout and sparking widespread pandemonium in surrounding areas.

Ghana National Fire Service spokesperson Billy Anaglate said the tanker fire caused explosions at a liquefied natural gas station and at a nearby petrol station.

According to eyewitnesses, the place looked like a worn torn zone with fire everywhere and people running for their lives.

The deputy information minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said a "significant number of persons" were affected by the explosion and "a few" had died.

Frightened residents ran from the explosion, which sent a giant fireball high into the sky, and several fire trucks and ambulances were deployed to the scene.

The explosion was reportedly caused by an open fire used to grill meat near the gas station.

He said "it is early days yet" to give figures on the number injured or dead, adding there were casualties.

The tanker explosion at a gas station in Ghana late on Saturday, was followed by a secondary blast, authorities said.

"There was some panic and we all just moved away from the scene", said eyewitness George Agbey.

Legon is a suburb of the capital, and is also home to the main campus of the University of Ghana.

Infrastructure in Accra, a city of roughly 7 million people, has failed to keep pace with population growth after years of rapid economic expansion.
