US Will Stay in Paris Climate Agreement After All

China has until 2030 to begin reducing emissions under the Paris Agreement

The White House immediately disavowed on Saturday a Wall Street Journal report suggesting the Trump administration is reversing its stated intention of abandoning the Paris climate accord.

The United States "stated that they will not renegotiate the Paris Accord, but they try to review the terms on which they could be engaged under this agreement", said the European Union's top climate official Miguel Arias Canete.

China's special representative for climate change affairs, Xie Zhenhua, emphasized the importance of pushing forward with the deal, in spite of the recent blow from the Trump administration announcing its plan to bow out.

"There has been no change in the United States' position on the Paris agreement", White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters said in a statement.

Court upholds ousted Egyptian leader Mohamed Morsi's life sentence
Egypt's Court of Cassation reduced Morsi's sentence in the Qatar case to 25 years in its final ruling, from an original 40 years. A court overturned a death sentence in another trial over prison breaks and violence during the 2011 revolt, pending a retrial.

If true, this would mark yet another reversal of a Trump campaign promise, one of the most controversial.

President Donald Trump in early June said the United States would exit the accord because other countries were, "gaining a financial advantage over the United States".

Canada's environment minister Catherine McKenna said during the Montreal summit that the Paris climate agreement was crucial to advancing the climate action agenda. It set a global goal to keep the planet from warming by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels, a threshold that scientists say could keep the planet from launching into a tailspin of irreversible consequences like unpredictable superstorms and crippling heat waves. Months later, the USA and China jointly said they would sign off on the deal.

"It's truly said to see all the fairweather friends turning on Trump", Baked Alaska said on Twitter. "And if we can't, that's fine".
