Trump warns North Korea of 'overwhelming' options

Trump: Options for North Korea are 'effective and overwhelming'

North Korea also has the world's largest standing army.

North Korea fired the intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan that landed in the Pacific, responding to new United Nations sanctions with its furthest-ever missile flight.

With San Francisco or NY in Kim's cross-hairs, would President Trump risk war with the North to defend Seoul or Tokyo in a future crisis?

On the other hand, the US and South Korea have announced diminishing willingness to talk to North Korea as it continues its provocative missile launches and nuclear tests.

The worry is less about a full-blown attack from the North on its neighbours (an unlikely possibility given that Kim is not suicidal) and more the prospect of low-level provocations - for example, the shelling by the North of contested border territories near the Northern Limit Line between North and South Korea, or use of cyber attacks to disrupt U.S. and allied command and control operations.

The increasing levels of sanctions will cut off 90 percent of North Korea's trade.

Nebenzia urged North Korea to "stop it" and said the only political proposal to resolve the standoff was the joint Russian-Chinese "freeze for freeze".

US Secretary of Defence James Mattis spoke over phone with his Japanese counterpart Itsunori Onodera following the latest North Korean missile launch, the Pentagon said.

In fact, the president was so impressed with Giaccio that he gave the boy a shoutout on Twitter . Standing with FX and his father, Mr Trump added: "We'll bring them into the Oval Office ".

US options range from everything to accepting North Korea as a nuclear power to using military force in a bid to destroy its arsenal and even oust leader Kim Jong Un.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command also determined that the missile had posed no threat to North America. The North Koreans must have been confident that their latest test - an audacious advance by some 1,000km on their earlier (29 August) overflight of Japan - would be successful and that the risk of the missile breaking up over Japanese airspace was minimal.

Up until recently, USA assurances to Japan and South Korea have been enough to keep both Seoul and Tokyo closely aligned with Washington in their responses to the North Korean threat.

The South Korean military responded to the provocation from the North by launching a Hyunmoo-II missile into the sea that traveled the distance it would take to reach the Sunan airfield in Pyongyang, according to a military spokesman. "China and Russian Federation must indicate their intolerance for these reckless missile launches by taking direct actions of their own", Tillerson demanded. Equally, as the North moves closer to placing a miniaturised nuclear warhead on a missile capable of hitting a United States city with pinpoint accuracy, how great is the risk that the U.S. might feel compelled to preemptively attack the North to prevent Kim from threatening the USA with a nuclear attack? North Korea has launched dozens of missiles under Kim Jong Un's leadership to accelerate a weapons programme created to give it the ability to target the United States with a powerful, nuclear-tipped missile.

The North Korean state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun on Friday said in an editorial, "If the USA continues to walk on the current course, we will take stronger actions for our self-defense". The U.N. Security Council met on Friday afternoon to discuss the North Korean launch, as requested by the United States and Japan. That launch came less than two weeks after Pyongyang staged its most powerful nuclear test yet.

At the beginning of this year, North Korea's Kim announced plans to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile that could strike the USA mainland.

Previous administrations have pressed the U.N.to embrace change.

While Washington warns of military options, it says it still wants a peaceful solution.
