Take 'Em Down NOLA march in solidarity with Charlottesville

What does the Confederacy mean in modern America

The mayor of Charlottesville called yesterday for a special session of Virginia's legislature to let localities decide the fate of Confederate monuments like the statue at the centre of a far-right rally last week that turned deadly.

Mayor Mike Signer of Charlottesville, Virginia, said in a statement that he wants Gov. Terry McAuliffe to convene an emergency meeting of the General Assembly to greenlight the removal of the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee monument from a city park.

Republican Corey Stewart successfully made the statue's proposed removal a key talking point in the GOP primary, which he nearly won despite being an underdog. The statues and the flags should come down.

Chaos erupted at the Charlottesville rally, which included neo-Nazis, skinheads, Ku Klux Klan members, and is believed to be the largest gathering of white supremacists in a decade.

The protests are different from previous ones in terms of its sheer scale and open display of Nazi propaganda. First, the monuments in question were built in the 20th century with the explicit objective of asserting racial supremacy of the white people.

Tottenham vs Chelsea Premier League Match Prediction
Marcos Alonso's double sealed Chelsea's first win of the season and Tottenham's disappointing start to life at Wembley. Christian Eriksen didn't find the net for Tottenham in the 2-0 victory, but was integral in picking up the win.

One counterprotester, Heather Heyer, 32, was killed and 19 others were injured when James Alex Fields Jr., 20, allegedly rammed his auto into a group demonstrating against the "Unite the Right" rally.

The National Park Service is part of the Executive Branch of the United States government and works under authority of President Donald Trump. Eighty-six percent, according to the Marist poll, disagree with the white supremacy movement and 94 percent disagree with the views of the KKK. Other towns and cities, like Baltimore, have chosen to take down or cover their confederate statues since the violent clashes in Charlottesville. Heyer died when a vehicle rammed into a group of people who were protesting the presence of white supremacists who had gathered in the city for a rally. That's no coincidence: Those statues began to rise after Union troops pulled out of the South and white supremacists began to assume power once again. When we honor and celebrate the Confederacy in public arenas, we validate and empower the people who wish to perpetuate the hatred and division that it represents.

SC would remove the Confederate flag from its state capitol grounds after the Charleston massacre. A Bluegrass Poll taken when the monument was being considered for removal showed that 73 percent of Kentuckians wanted Davis to stay in his rightful place next to Abraham Lincoln in our Capitol.

Jefferson worked to unite our early republic; Lee fought on behalf of the Confederate states seeking to maintain slavery. So this isn't something the country needs to honour or commemorate in any possible way.

"When it comes to the Confederate memorabilia or symbols or what have you, they may be good for some, but they are hurtful to others", Muwakkil said. "The statue will be preserved so that students can study Duke's complex past and take part in a more inclusive future". But historians believe that the documents from the time reveal that Confederacy was built upon maintaining slavery. "Each of us deserves a voice in determining how to address the questions raised by the statues of Robert E. Lee and others, and confront the darker moments in our nation's history". After all, the school was founded by Thomas Jefferson, a brilliant man who helped found this country-and a slave owner. "You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?" Hundreds of people chanted, threw punches, hurled water bottles and unleashed chemical sprays on each other Saturday after violence erupted at a white nationalist rally in Virginia. At least one public appearance was with Kessler. About one third of African-American children live in poverty in the United States, which is largely if not exclusively due to the legacy of Jim Crow segregation and the limited educational, vocational, and housing opportunities. But Trump has also tried to stand up for something else: the statues that the white supremacists ostensibly came to defend.
