What does the United States military do on the island of Guam?

North Korea 'carefully examining' plan to strike US territory of Guam

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) allayed fears over the possible impact of North Korea's plan to launch ballistic missiles at the US Pacific territory of Guam on Manila, which is some 1,500 miles away.

Jenna Gaminde told a press briefing on Thursday that the residents would be immediately notified by the 15 All-Hazards Alert Warning System sirens, located in low-lying areas throughout the island, the Pacific Daily News reported.

The small US territory of Guam has become a focal point after North Korea's army threatened to use ballistic missiles to create an "enveloping fire" around the island.

It said the plan, which involves the missiles hitting waters 30 to 40 kilometers (19 to 25 miles) from the island, could be sent to leader Kim Jong Un for approval within a week or so.

Trump tweeted Friday: "Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely".

Trump adds that millions of Americans support his words because "finally we have a president that's sticking up for our nation and frankly sticking up for our friends and our allies". "He goes around threatening Guam and threatening the United States".

The U.S. president's warnings that Pyongyang will "regret" any threats or action against the U.S. are a break with the diplomatic language of his predecessors. If carried out, it would be the North's most provocative missile launch to date. No doubt, the country's nuclear missile development has progressed at a faster pace than anticipated by the US government.

The announcement Thursday warned that the North is finalizing a plan to fire four of its Hwasong-12 missiles over Japan and into waters around the tiny island, which hosts 7,000 USA military personnel on two main bases and has a population of 160,000.

South Korean analyst Lee Sang Hyun from the Sejong Institute think-tank told The Straits Times that both the United States and North Korea are issuing "maximum threats" to each other, a situation that can continue for weeks, or even months.

In response, Trump on Tuesday threatened the communist country "with fire and fury".

Meanwhile, American and South Korean officials said they would move forward with large-scale military exercises later this month that North Korea claims are a rehearsal for war. -South Korea drills begin.

The lives of the people in South Korea should not be threatened by the provocative acts of the United States and North Korea, said the letter.

"If anything happens, we all got to be ready, be prepared, and pray to God that it doesn't happen", Daisy Mendiola, 56, said after finishing lunch with her family at a restaurant near Hagatna.

A travel agent on Guam said they haven't had a surge of customers seeking to book flights off the island.

North Korea first fired a missile over Japan in 1998, prompting the Japanese government to initiate its current ballistic missile-defence system with the US.

A key U.S. military stronghold, Guam was the departure point for US B-52 bombers that attacked Hanoi during the 1955-1975 Vietnam war.

Moon believes the best way to solve the North Korean nuclear crisis is engagement of the sort that two past liberal leaders used to win historic summits with Pyongyang.

"But I have to say, I'm not laughing now", Thompson said. Trump must work toward policy coordination within his administration and ramp up cooperation with USA allies, including Japan and South Korea.

A USA nuclear expert has warned that Kim Jong-un might be coming closer to being able to produce a hydrogen bomb, also known as thermonuclear weapon, as it is able to produce tritium, a key element. "They're not going to die here and (President Donald Trump) told me that to my face".
