Trump tells China: Probe into trade practices coming

U.S. President Donald Trump will call on Monday for his chief trade adviser to investigate China's intellectual property practices, website Politico reported, citing an unnamed administration official.

"China's been engaged in the theft and forced transfer of United States technologies and intellectual property for years".

Trump's warning came after the North Korea threatened to fire ballistic missiles over Japan towards the US Pacific island of Guam.

In a phone call Friday, Trump praised Chinese President Xi Jinping for backing the recent United Nations vote to impose tougher sanctions on North Korea.

It wasn't immediately clear how China would react to the move.

They said that USA companies had long suffered because of Chinese intellectual-property violations, and that they expected Congress and the business community to support the measure.

The decision will not only take action against alleged Chinese violations of USA companies' intellectual property rights, but could also be perceived as an attempt by the US government to crank up the pressure on Beijing to rein in North Korea.

Rep. David Cicilline urged Speaker Paul Ryan on Friday to call back the House from its August recess in order to debate legislation that would require congressional approval for a US pre-emptive strike.

The man behind the documentary "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power" may not see eye-to-eye with Mr. Trump on environmental issues, but he told Newsweek for an interview published Friday that diplomatic crises over North Korea's nuclear weapons program is another story.

And then on Thursday, when speaking with reporters, Trump said in relation to North Korea, "if China helps us, I feel a lot differently toward trade".

The measure would seek to address what the United States business community has described as flagrant trade violations by China, which employs a variety of rules and practices to wall its market off from foreign competition and pressure U.S. companies to part with valuable product designs and trade secrets - or to steal them outright.

The USTR Robert Lighthizer would consider whether to probe China's trade practices under Section 301 of the Trade Act, senior administration officials said, but they declined to say when the USTR's decision would be made.

"Protection measures against some specific items, such as steel and aluminum, may gain political favors, but are not likely to be of much help to rebalance trade", economists at the Institute of International Finance wrote in a research note this week.
