Swiss franc eases slightly after spiking on North Korea tensions

"Trump's comments about North Korea have created nervousness and the fear is if the President really means what he said: "fire and fury", said Naeem Aslam, chief market analyst at Think Markets in London.

On Friday, an MSCI index of stocks across the globe posted its largest weekly drop since the week before Trump won the United States presidential election in November. The Dow Jones Industrial Average .dji fell 204.69 points, or 0.93 percent, to close at 21,844.01, the S&P 500 .spx lost 35.81 points, or 1.45 percent, to 2,438.21 and the Nasdaq Composite .ixic dropped 135.46 points, or 2.13 percent, to 6,216.87.

The ongoing political crisis that has seen North Korea state it was seeking to strike the US Pacific island territory of Guam within days, prompted gold speculator Dennis Gartman, editor and publisher of The Gartman Letter to say he believed gold was on the cusp on a significant break out.

According to analyst Simona Gambarini, the price of gold "tends to rise in anticipation of a conflict but often falls when tensions turn into a full-blown war". As the war rhetoric between the United States and North Korea reached a boiling point with both the parties threatening to act, Gold has broken the resistance line around $1267 per troy ounce and reached as high as $1289 per troy ounce. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was 0.6 percent lower.

On Friday, the S&P 500 rose 3.11 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,441.32. Randgold Resources Ltd. and Barrick Gold Corp. were among the best performers, each gaining more than 1.4 percent.

Against the Swiss Franc, the dollar erased earlier losses to traded little changed on the day. The Japanese yen hit an eight-week high against the USA dollar, and US -traded Nikkei stock futures dropped 2 percent to their lowest since mid May. Chinese blue chips closed flat but Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.4 percent.

The Swiss franc had also risen more than 1 percent against the euro on Wednesday, recording one of its largest single-day jumps against the euro since the Swiss National Bank removed its cap on the Swiss franc in January 2015.

Macy's M.N shares closed down 10.2 per cent and Kohl's KSS.N fell nearly 6 per cent as the companies continued to report a drop in quarterly same-store sales, stoking concerns that their turnarounds may still be a long way off. As a result, the yield on the benchmark ten-year note, which moves opposite of its price, fell by 2.9 basis points to 2.212%. Brent crude, used to price global oils, rose 20 cents to $52.10 a barrel in London. TripAdvisor shares shed $2.70, or 6.8 percent, to $36.85. The dollar notched a two-month trough on the safe-haven Japanese yen and was last down 0.3 percent at 109.99. The NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index plunged by 3.4% to its lowest closing level in well over a month. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 1.2 percent to 5,693.10.
