Muslim woman wins $85k case

Muslim woman awarded £65,000 after police pulled off her hijab

The woman was allegedly stripped of her hijab during an arrest.

"I would never want anyone to go through what I felt from this experience", Powell said when the suit was filed past year, according to CAIR.

"We commend Kirsty Powell for choosing to defend her right to religious freedom and taking action", said civil rights attorney Marwa Rifahie of the Los Angeles chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

LOS ANGELES | A muslim woman who had her veil forcibly removed by police officers during his time in custody, will receive $ 85,000 from the city of Long Beach, in the suburbs of Los Angeles, in the framework of an amicable agreement.

After officers had checked Powell's identification, they discovered she had three misdemeanor warrants on her record.

Despite explaining her hijab's religious significance, Powell alleged that the head covering was forcibly removed by a male officer during her arrest, and not returned to her until she was released from jail the following day. "I want my Muslim sisters to always feel comfortable and safe wearing a hijab and to stand up for what's right".

Secondly, Sean McVay is the new head coach and didn't have a weapon like Watkins on the Redskins last season. McDermott's first draft class - general manager Doug Whaley was gone shortly thereafter - looks promising.

"She was held in the jail overnight, forced to sit in a cell feeling distraught, vulnerable and naked without her headscarf to everyone that passed", according to the lawsuit.

'She felt that the male officers and male inmates had seen parts of her body that they should not have seen, according to her religious beliefs'.

Powell filed the lawsuit in April 2016, alleging the police department had violated her First Amendment rights.

Powell contacted CAIR, Council on American-Islamic Relations, following the ordeal.

Following the suit, the department changed its policies.

Assistant City Attorney, Monte Machit said, "The city chose to settle because we viewed the claims by her as meritorious". The religious head covering would then be delivered back to the inmate.
