Mega 6.5 magnitude natural disaster rocks Indonesia - tremors felt '400 MILES AWAY'

The quake hit at a depth of 35 kilometres at 10:08 am 73 kilometres west of Bengkulu on Sunday

Singapore broadcaster Channel NewsAsia said it received calls from residents in the city state who felt tremors.

There have been no immediate reports of fatalities or damage from the rumble, although officials were still said to be examining the situation.

Chairman of the West Sumatra branch of the Indonesian Association of Geologists, Ade Edward, said the epicenter was known as a subduction zone, which was prone to big earthquakes. It was centered 74 kilometers (46 miles) west of the coastal city of Bengkulu.

Bengkulu resident Neng Hasnah said the quake felt very strong for a few seconds, forcing her and her family members to flee her house.

"As the natural disaster got stronger, I told my wife who was cooking in the kitchen to immediately get out of the house". Power outages were reported in some areas, but no structural damage was reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a magnitude of 6.4 and occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers (21 miles).
