The FBI said it has opened a civil rights investigation into the circumstances that led a driver to plow a auto into a crowd while white nationalist activists and counter-protesters clashed in Charlottesville on Saturday (Aug 12).

The police on Saturday evening identified the suspected driver of the vehicle as 20-year-old James Fields. Fields is held on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding and failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death, CNN reported.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregiousdisplay of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides". You are not wanted in this commonwealth.

The violence prompted First Lady Melania Trump to call for an end to the clashes, tweeting: "Our country encourages freedom of speech, but let's communicate w/o hate in our hearts".

"There were just a few cars that counter-protesters were blocking", the man said.

The series opener Friday was postponed after a lengthy rain delay to be a part of a day-night doubleheader Sunday. Rookie Andrew Stevenson came on to play center field in the second and Brian Goodwin moved from center to right.

State and local police were responding to a deadly three-car crash at a white nationalist rally earlier this afternoon. In Jenkintown, Montgomery County, a little more than two dozen people gathered at the town square.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a one-time Trump rival, appeared to rally to the president's aid, tweeting that it was "very important for the nation to hear @potus describe events in #Charlottesville for what they are, a terror attack by #whitesupremacists".

On Friday night, torch-wielding white nationalists marched through the University of Virginia campus, which was condemned by the university president and other officials. "The premediated violence that our community experienced today was completely unacceptable", he said.

The white nationalist "Unite the Right" demonstration - organized by right-wing blogger Jason Kessler - was organized in protest of a plan to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

President Donald Trump on Saturday blamed "many sides" for the violent clashes between protesters and white supremacists in Virginia and contended that the "hatred and bigotry" broadcast across the country had taken root long before his political ascendancy.
