Roger Federer continued his longest winning streak in five years by reaching the Rogers Cup final.

With top seed Rafael Nadal knocked out in the third round by Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, 19-time grand slam victor Federer is thick in the fight for a return to the top of the ATP list.

The first signs of the player who beat Rafael Nadal less than 24 hours earlier came in the fifth game when Shapovalov fought off five break points to win his first game, but Mannarino served out the set.

The 36th-ranked Schwartzman next faces the victor between seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov and Robin Haase.

Second-seeded Swiss Roger Federer coasted into the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Spain's Roberto Bautista-Agut here.

"If I would have known I would have gone to the finals, I would have said "yes" right away".

"Wimbledon was always my favourite tournament, will always be my favourite tournament", Federer said after winning the tournament for the eighth time. "Both things combined, two major factors in a beginning of a match, I was able to get into the match better". I expect a good match, " noted the Master, who has won the only clash between the two players, in 2012.

"I actually feel really happy because I know I can play a lot better".

As thousands of people travel to SC to watch the historic eclipse, the hunt is on for protective lenses to view the phenomenon. For anyone who welds as part of their profession or as a hobby, this could be a way to not have to buy anything new at all.

Federer advances to the semi-finals where he will face Robin Haase of the Netherlands, who defeated Diego Schwartzman 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 earlier in the day.

Federer is seeking a third title in Canada, first in Montreal after wins in Toronto in 2004 and 2006. "I got some decent rhythm going".

"I saved four match points the first round (against Rogerio Dutra Silva)".

For nearly two decades, spectators have flocked to Federer's breathtaking matches and followed the ebb and flow of his career.

"I'm looking forward to a tough match because he can serve very well and he mixes up his tactics a lot", said Federer.

Haase, who upset seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the third round, was in his first career semifinal of a Masters Series tournament. I came from vacation, did some fitness, saw how I was feeling and said, 'You know what, I practiced so much the past year, let's go play some matches'. "But, in general, to make an achievement like this is good because it shows you can do it".

"I told him he had a great run, well done to him, to not worry too much that he lost today", said Zverev.
