Death toll in Nepal landslides, floods rises to 49

Rural regions were completely cut off by floods and landslides with communications taken out too

Nepal Police said 32 persons have been killed in the past month due to flood and landslides.

The Ministry also stated that personnel of the Nepalese Army, Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, trained security persons and other human resources have been mobilized under the leadership of the local administrations for carrying out search and rescue in the flood affected and inundated areas.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, seven persons were killed in Sunsari district in southern Nepal.

Footage aired on Nepali broadcasters showed villagers wading through waist-high water with their belongings and using boats to reach higher ground. Biratnagar airport has been closed after flood water gushed into the airport area.

Around 600 tourists were stranded due to flooding in Sauraha in Chitwan.

Highways were either damaged or inundated, disrupting transport, the police said.

"I have already instructed authorities concerned to rescue flood victims, move them to safer locations and immediately provide relief to them". Monsoon rains from June to September are important for farm-dependent Nepal, but they also cause havoc each year.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said further heavy rains were expected on Sunday in the country's central and mid-western regions.
