US stocks slip as North Korea tensions mount

The 30-stock average has closed at a record high for nine straight days, and it's up 10 in a row overall.

"Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely".

The price of gold, a safe-haven asset, hit its highest levels in two months as North Korea and the United States exchanged more threats, with North Korea outlining detailed plans for a missile strike near the Pacific territory of Guam.

"We're not very oversold yet so the market still has more downside left to it".

"European shares are trading once again lower. continuing their slide on the back of ever more increasing tensions between North Korea and the U.S.", added analyst Markus Huber at City of London Markets.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 36 points, or 0.2 percent, to 22,048.

The utilities index, often seen as a bond proxy because of its companies' slow reliable growth and high dividends, was the only S&P sector that ended the day up, showing a 0.25 percent gain. Netflix lost 1.5 per cent. Britain's FTSE 100 was down 1%.

"Pretty remarkable, perhaps even extraordinary, considering", said Tim Ash, strategist at fund manager BlueBay.

The CBOE Volatility Index, the most widely followed barometer of expected near-term stock market volatility, was up as much as 12.63 points, its highest in more than a month.

On the currency markets, the pound edged 0.2% lower versus the United States dollar at 1.298, as traders responded to another tranche of lacklustre data from the United Kingdom economy.

Sterling was relatively flat against the dollar at 1.3002 after earlier wavering, but gained 0.14% on the euro to 1.1072, with the single currency down by a similar degree against the greenback, which in turn was down 0.38% against the yen.

The US Producer Price Index has seen its biggest fall in almost a year. On the Nasdaq, 1,462 issues rose and 1,227 fell.

Sterling was last trading at $1.3009, up 0.27 percent on the day. As a result, the yield on the benchmark ten-year note, which moves opposite of its price, is down by 2 basis points at 2.192%.

The latest U.S. economic data cemented expectations that inflation will remain subdued amid a robust labour market. Kohl's shares are down 15% in the year to date, compared to a 10.5% gain for the S&P 500 [s:spx].

Barrick Gold Corp rose 2.1 percent to C$21.7, while Goldcorp Inc rose 0.9 percent to C$16.29.

Hong Kong shed more than one percent and Shanghai also closed lower, while Seoul shares continued their sell-off after slumping Wednesday, with the won again softening.

US gold futures gained 0.26 percent to $1,293.50 an ounce.
