TSX closes 143 points lower, gold rises amid US-North Korean tensions

Gold prices continued to climb on Friday, as geopolitical tensions between the USA and North Korea kept safe-haven demand elevated while data showing July inflation undershot expectations, lessened the prospect of a rate hike this year.

The downbeat inflation data added to growing expectations the Federal Reserve may abandon its plan to hike rates later this year, after the central bank left its benchmark rate unchanged in June, citing concerns over the stuttering pace of inflation. Wall Street was poised for further losses at the opening bell, with Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures down 0.3 percent.

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index lost 1.01 per cent and MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe shed 0.26 per cent for a weekly loss of 1.6 per cent, the largest since the week to November 4.

North Korea had responded to Mr Trump's previous promise to unleash "fire and fury", with a threat to land a missile near the US Pacific territory of Guam.

The euro, which hit its highest since the start of 2015 on August 2, dipped 0.1 percent to $1.1761 in morning trade in Europe.

The tentative gains "suggest that the headline shock value pertaining to the US-North Korea standoff is starting to dissipate, which is to say actual action will now speak much louder than words", said Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare.

European stock markets fell further in opening trade on Friday on intensifying fears over North Korea, dealers said.

Later on Friday, investors will look to U.S. July consumer price data for hints on the Fed's policy outlook and near-term moves in the dollar. US -traded Nikkei futures NKc1 fell 2 percent to their lowest since mid-May.

The yen tends to benefit during times of geopolitical or financial stress as Japan is the world's biggest creditor nation and there is an assumption that Japanese investors there will repatriate funds should a crisis materialize. "But we're in a low inflationary environment, which can help valuations remain elevated for longer than they would otherwise". Basically if the streak of trading days without a 1%+ up or down day is going to be broken, it's better for it to break with a 1%+ down day than a 1%+ up day.

CURRENCIES: The euro was down 0.1 percent at $1.175 while the dollar fell 0.6 percent to 109.68 yen. The market was waiting f or USA consumer inflation data on Friday that would offer more clues about future Fed decisions.

In bond markets, the yield in U.S. Treasuries fell, also pressured by the lowered expectations for a Fed move.

Pan American Silver Corp, which reported second-quarter results late Wednesday, rallied 10.7 percent to C$22.47.

The yen gained more than 0.2 percent in Asian time as investors took their money out of higher-yielding currency plays following another warning from President Donald Trump to Pyongyang.

After touching a more than two-month high at US$1,291.86, spot gold last added 0.2 per cent to US$1,288.81 an ounce.

This week has seen its biggest rise since June 2016.
