Oxygen supply blamed as 60 children die at one hospital in India

Congress leaders Sonia Rahul Gandhi express pain at UP child deaths

Informing that a Samajwadi Party (SP) delegation will visiting Gorakhpur in the wake of 64 deaths due to alleged shortage of oxygen supply in Baba Raghav Das Medical College hospital, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said the state government and administration is hiding crucial facts in the case. The government however said that only seven had died.

"Total 30 deaths in last 48 hours".

Chief Medical Superintendent Dr R.S. Shukla said on Friday at least 10 of the children at BRD Medical College, the largest in Gorakhpur, had died because of encephalitis.

'The deaths were not due to lack of oxygen as is being reported.

Gorakhpur District Magistrate Rajeev Rautela said on Friday: "No death in BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, has taken place due to shortage of oxygen supply".

A statement issued by the state Information Department late evening categorically denied reports shown by "some TV channels as misleading".

As many as 63 children have died since the past six days as the oxygen supply to the company was allegedly cut by the supplier - Pushpa Private Limited.

The Prime Minister in a tweet on Saturday said that he has deputed Minister of State for Health, Anupriya Patel and Union health secretary to take stock of the situation from Gorakhpur.

Heavy rains trigger flood-like situation
Rivers in South Sikkim are also likely to flow in Moderate Flood situation during the period from 10th to 15th August 2017. A portion of National Highway 415, which connects state capital Itanagar with Assam, eroded near Karsingsa on Friday.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today issued directives to authorities to reach the spot and initiate a thorough probe, while ensuring strict action.

The region is also one of India's poorest and registers hundreds of child deaths each year from Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, which is rife in parts of eastern and northern India. Will wait for report, action will be taken. Sources said the supply of oxygen to the hospital was stopped on Thursday night due to non-payment of dues to the firm engaged in supplying oxygen to the hospital.

On the other hand, Rautela said he found from doctors that no death had occurred due to lack of oxygen.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who visited the hospital, blamed the State government for the "lapse" and demanded that the Health Minister and Medical Education Minister be sacked.

"We were not rushed here to conduct any inquiry as the state government is already doing that".

Adityanath said, "The oxygen supply was low for about two hours, but the BRD Medical College had a system that beeped about it and after which the oxygen pressure was pumped manually".

Sixty children died between August 7 and 11 in BRD Hospital, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
