Jury deadlocked in Bill Cosby sex assault trial, ordered to continue deliberations

"We definitely want this thing to end, and hope the judge will tell jurors they've done their civic duty and that they've done it with ethics and integrity, and release them".

It was a dramatic turn of events in a trial entering its ninth day, including four days of deliberations.

The jury began deliberating Monday.

The jury tells the judge that it "cannot come to a unanimous consensus on any of the counts".

Count two involves whether or not Constand could give consent: was she conscious and aware or was she incapacitated? Questioning Wyatt's knowledge of the law, Allred made it clear: "Jury can deliberate however long they wish".

If a lone holdout is refusing to deliberate or continue the discussion, a judge has some leeway to replace a problem juror with one of the alternates.

"It's obviously going to be hard after this many hours of deliberation", former prosecutor Dennis McAndrews, who has been monitoring the trial, said of the chance they reach a verdict.

Cosby has wavered between stoic and smiling as he awaits his fate, but he gave a brief thumbs-up as jurors listened to a court reporter reread his January 2005 police interview.

Under what's called an Allen charge, O'Neill ordered jurors to push for a verdict if they can. There was a smile on his face. The have been sequestered in a hotel for the trial after being bused in from Allegheny County, Pa.

There is no rule on how many times O'Neill can order jurors back to work under the Spencer Charge.

Authorities declined to charge Cosby when she first came forward in 2005, but a new district attorney reopened the case in 2015 after Cosby's deposition was unsealed at the request of The Associated Press.

The trial marks a crushing fall from grace for an entertainer known for his seminal role as a lovable father and obstetrician on hit TV series "The Cosby Show".

The defendant, legally blind and palming the handle of a pencil-thin wooden cane, entered the courthouse in this working-class Philadelphia suburb each day clasping Wyatt's arm. Cosby gave the deposition more than a decade ago as part of accuser Andrea Constand's lawsuit against him.

The jury has asked the judge multiple times to rehear testimony, including what Cosby told authorities and what Constand said during her time on the witness stand. According to an affidavit, Constand has accused Cosby of drugging her with three blue pills and then making physical contact without her consent including forcing his hands into her pants and coercing her into touching his erect penis in 2004.

Lili Bernard, who claims Cosby sexually assaulted her in the early '90s when she was preparing for a guest appearance on "The Cosby Show", said she loved Cosby and he took advantage of her. Prosecutors argued Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted Constand at his home near Philadelphia in 2004. Constand was the director of operations for the Temple women's team.

The three criminal counts against the comedian each has a slightly different criteria for a guilty verdict.

If convicted Cosby, 79, could have spent the rest of his life in prison. After about 30 minutes of reading, jurors went back to the deliberation room at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
