Insurer predicts thousands will leave health care market

A major health insurance provider in ME is predicting enrollment in the state's Affordable Care Act insurance market will drop.

The state Department of Insurance released prosed 2018 rates on Thursday.

The two companies are all that remain in the exchange after Anthem and MDwise announced Wednesday they had made a decision to drop their in exchange plans, citing regulatory uncertainty. That leaves CareSource Indiana Inc. and Celtic Insurance Company as the only companies that remain.

The average rate increase requested by the companies is 17.8 percent.

He also signalled that last-minute changes were coming to win enough support for passage. Johnson's Democratic counterpart representing Wisconsin, Sen.

Celtic is asking for a minimum increase of 24 percent, with a maximum increase of 117 percent. Their average premium would be $452. Anthem will also sell one such plan in five in counties.

Florida Blue officials said earlier this month that if the new health law takes out the current subsidies, their rates could be 20 percent higher than what they were submitting to the state. The mandate is seen as crucial to encouraging healthy people to enroll and balance the costs an insurer incurs from people who use their insurance.

"On behalf of the physician and medical student members of the American Medical Association (AMA), I am writing to express our opposition to the discussion draft of the "Better Care Reconciliation Act" released on June 22, 2017", wrote AMA executive vice president and CEO James Madara, in a letter to the Senate leaders of both parties. The bill, which was released with no analysis and no cost estimates, would cut taxes by almost $1 trillion over the next decade, mostly for corporations and the richest families in America.
