UK Will Allow 3 Million EU Migrants To Stay After Brexit

A Cameron government source confirmed the account but made clear the matter was not decided in a full Cabinet meeting but through discussion.

Furthermore, half of the respondents in the United Kingdom and Italy, and over a third of respondents in France and Germany, said they believe that more than one EU state will pursue this course of action - a dire prediction for the future of the European Union. In return she wants a similar deal for British people who stay on the continent.

It seems she's not the only one who is prepared to use expatriates as bargaining chips.

"This reduces the uncertainty linked to the Brexit", said European Council President Donald Tusk. He said the European Union wanted to secure the "full rights" of all its citizens and British expats on the continent, the Independent reported.

At the end of a Brussels summit dinner on Thursday, May had outlined five principles.

With Theresa May and her team leading the negotiations, I'm confident that can be delivered.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted that the EU's future take priority over Brexit talks as Prime Minister Theresa May met European leaders for the first time since a disastrous election gamble.

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker described May's offer as a "first step" but said it was not "sufficient".

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said "thousands of questions" remained on the key topic.

"We don't want to buy a pig in a poke", said Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, calling May's opening "an extremely vague proposal for something that is incredibly complicated".

"This is important to pave the way also for good relations after the separation", Antonio Tajani, the EU Parliament's president said. "By doing so she is treating British people living in Europe the same".

Chile into semis after draw with profligate Australia
Cameroon goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa prevented Germany from extending its lead by blocking Kimmich's shot from a tight angle. He said: "It's why we're here, we wanted to be alive when the last game came around, we weren't at the [2014] World Cup".

European Union citizens who had already arrived in Britain before that date and during a "grace period" of up to two years, would qualify for a special "settled status", granting them the same rights as British citizens and able to be kept for life.

Others would be allowed to stay until they reach the five-year threshold for "settled status". Red tape for permanent residency would be cut and there would be a two-year grace period to avoid "cliff edge" mishaps.

The cut-off date is up for negotiation.

Some migrants anxious that the proposals meant their rights would no longer be protected by the European Court of Justice after an EU membership referendum previous year in which they had no say.

The coordinator for the Brexit negotiations in the legislature said that "unclarity about the cutoff date, family reunification and uncertainty about jurisdiction are not what we are looking for".

"This is a fair and serious offer", she said.

Asked to expand, Tusk said it was obvious that Brexit would have a negative impact on citizens' rights. "It's neither fair nor serious".

However, Mr Austin says that since the Grenfell Tower fire last week he now has concerns about how rigorous quality checks will be post-Brexit for imported goods.

It also called for the ECJ to have a role - something unacceptable to Mrs May.

May has been clear Brexit will happen. The president of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani said "nobody knows" whether the United Kingdom will have a soft or hard Brexit. "Never before have I had such a strong belief that things are going in a better direction", he said.
