Tory-DUP deal 'imminent' as Foster and May resume talks

The leader of a Northern Ireland-based party struck a 1.5 billion-pound ($1.9 billion) deal with British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservatives on Monday to support her minority government in a crucial vote on her legislative package later this week.

The DUP has also secured £1bn in extra funding over the next two years, and has been given more flexibility in how the £500m already pledged to Northern Ireland can be spent.

The deal will "deliver a stable government in the United Kingdom's national interest at this vital time", Foster said.

First Secretary of State Mr Green said the Conservatives "could have" continued without signing the deal.

Ian Blackford, a leader of the Scottish National Party, said his party would do everything possible to make sure Scotland gets "its fair share" under a formula that prescribes how United Kingdom government funds are shared by England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

'We're back in London again and my hope is that we will be able to finalise the deal between ourselves and the Conservative Party, ' she said. With the support of the 10 DUP lawmakers, May would have a majority.

On other legislation, however, the DUP's support is not necessarily guaranteed - although the Northern Ireland party is expected to back the majority of the government's programme for the next two years after many of its more controversial policies were dropped.

'So the agreement we have come to is a very, very good one, and look forward to working with you'. The DUP has 10 seats in Parliament, enough to guarantee passage of the government's agenda.

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said the agreement suits May's wish to stay in power but does little for the country.

Responding to the DUP's claims that a deal could come by Tuesday, a Downing Street spokesman said talks are ongoing.

As part of the deal, money will be earmarked to address a bottleneck between three busy roads in Northern Ireland and to open up "new opportunities for growth and connectivity" in digital infrastructure.

The DUP and Conservatives have also agreed that a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation commitment to spending 2% of GDP on the armed forces will be adhered to, and that the Armed Forces' covenant will be fully implemented in Northern Ireland.

"It provides a blank cheque for a Tory Brexit which threatens the Good Friday Agreement". Sinn Fein said last week that "time was running out" given the lack of knowledge about the impact of any Conservative/DUP deal.

It is understood the crux of the Tory-DUP deal in London rests mainly on an economic package for Northern Ireland including increased capital spending on health and education, the granting of special lower corporation tax status for the region and the possible abolition in Northern Ireland of air passenger duty tax.

The agreement has been greeted with widespread anger, with Gerry Adams, the leader of Sinn Fein, warning it will threaten the Good Friday agreement.
