Senior politicians visit Finsbury Park mosque following horror attack

"We are devastated for the families; our hearts go out to the people who have been injured".

His nephew Ellis Osborne, 26, said his uncle was "not a racist" and had never expressed any racist views.

Osborne injured at least 10 people and killed one; eight remain in hospital in critical condition. "My friends told me there were two other guys with him but they caught the driver", said Warfa.

Police arrested Osborne on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder as well as attempted murder after a vehicle ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians near a north London mosque. The police searched his house in Cardiff yesterday.

Residents near Cardiff said said they were "shocked" after seeing photographs of their neighbour being arrested in London.

Organisers, who arranged the event under the banner of "No To Islamophobia - Unity with Finsbury Park Mosque", say the attack did not take place in a vacuum but occurred in a climate of sensationalist and irresponsible attempts to demonise Muslims by sections of the press, commentators and some politicians.

Society president Robert Bourns said: 'The people caught up in this terrible attack will be dealing with enormous personal distress, as are victims of the other recent terrorist attacks.

"It was an attack that once again targeted the ordinary and the innocent going about their daily lives - this time British Muslims as they left a mosque having broken their fast and prayed together at this sacred time of year", said British Prime Minister Theresa May. The suspect was shot dead by police.

Redbridge Council's leader and the chairman of the Federation of Redbridge Muslim Organisations (Formo) have put out a joint statement condemning the Finsbury Park terror attack.

London police chief Cressida Dick said the incident was "quite clearly an attack on Muslims" and promised a stepped-up police presence near mosques as the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close.

Osborne was reportedly born in Singapore and is believed to have moved to Wales from Weston-Super-Mare in west England.

"I tackled him on the floor until the police came", he told the BBC.

"I can't believe it", Mr Naema, a taxi driver, said. "So we just run straight away, I see police, ambulance, people lying on the floor, and a van as well", said Al-Sulaman.

In a telephone interview with ITV News, mum Christine only found out her son was in custody after seeing him on television.

Meanwhile, Scotland Yard has announced extra police patrols will be laid on to offer reassurance to the public and those observing Ramadan.

British Security Minister Ben Wallace said authorities were aware of rising far-right activity, but were not aware of the suspect prior to the attack near a north London mosque.

Basu said it was a "challenging" time for London and that the emergency services were stretched.
